Jeanine's POV
She strides with me as we walk about Erudite Headquarters. Karen is never in front of me, or behind. We walk in unison, our footsteps hitting the white tiled floor at the same time. Yet I lead us to the laboratory. We walk through a hallway that I know doesn't have any form of surveillance. As we rush, we slow down and I wrap my arm around her waist. She leans into me with a small smile. I attempt to return one.
Love is an unfamiliar feeling acknowledged by the Erudite. Our faction rewards behavior that promotes work rather than family bonding. Usually by the time members are 17, they tend to focus more on their internships and studies.
Karen was an Erudite born. It was when I taught her in my class on neuroscience that I recognized her potential... and my unconditional love for her. When she ranked first in her year, I offered her a job as my co-worker. Just as an Erudite would do, she accepted the position, especially since she would be working along side her faction's rightful leader.
I unravel my arm from Karen's waist as the hallway ends, and kiss her head, absorbing the smell of lavender. Karen is only a few inches shorter than me. Also a few years younger. I don't like to think about it. It doesn't matter. We can still be together. Jeanine and Karen Matthews.
