Sam, Dean, and Kat pulled into a run down gas station, the Impala slowing to a stop near the pumps.
Dean reached over and turned off the radio. "Alright, I figure we hit Tucumcari by lunch, then head south, hit Bisbee by midnight."
In the passenger seat, Sam was busy scrolling through emails on his PalmPilot, barely acknowledging Dean.
Dean smirked. "Sam wears women's underwear," he quipped mockingly.
Without looking up, Sam replied, "I've been listening. I'm just busy."
Dean frowned. "Busy doin' what?"
"Reading emails," Sam answered flatly.
Dean climbed out of the car and moved to the pump, beginning to fill the tank.
In the backseat, Kat stretched, cracking her knuckles and smirking. "He means checking emails from Rebecca."
Sam shot her a look but didn't respond, his silence speaking volumes.
Dean glanced back with a grin. "Who?"
"Friends from Stanford," Sam said without looking up.
Dean snorted. "You're kidding. You still keep in touch with your college buddies?"
"Why not?" Sam asked casually.
Dean leaned against the car, peering in at Sam, "Well, what exactly do you tell 'em? You know, about where you've been, what you've been doin'?"
Sam shrugged. "I tell 'em I'm on a road trip with my family. I tell 'em I needed some time off after Jess."
"Oh, so you lie to 'em," Dean quipped.
"No, I just don't tell them...everything," Sam corrected.
Dean shook his head, a sarcastic smile on his face. "Yeah, that's called lying. I mean, hey man, I get it—tellin' the truth is far worse."
Kat climbed out of the car, standing next to Dean as he filled the tank. "Oh, come on, Dean. What's he supposed so say? 'Hey it's Sam. Oh, by the way, I hunt monsters on weekends.'"
Dean smirked, glancing at her. "How about don't say anything at all?"
"Since when do you care about honesty anyways?" Kat shot back.
Dean raised his brows, feigning innocence. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, I don't know," she said, ticking off on her fingers. "Fake names, fake jobs, fake badges...you lie more in a week than Sam's lied in his whole life."
Dean looked down for a moment, struggling to find a comeback.
Sam spoke up next, "Yeah Dean, don't you think it's a little hypocritical?"
Dean shrugged, "Look, it sucks. But in a job like this, you can't get close to people, period."
Sam scoffed, "You're close with Kat." He said, glancing between the two of them.
Dean stiffened slightly. "Yeah, well...I mean, that's different. She's like us. And she knows as well as I do that there's no such thing as 'healthy relationships' in our line of work."
Kat tilted her head, "Speak for yourself, playboy."
Sam chuckled at her comment, returning his focus to his emails.
Dean shot her a baffled look. "Hey, don't hound me for not being a total nun like you two."
"A nun? I'm just not a skank," Kat quipped, turning to face him. "Besides, we never stick around anywhere long enough for me to find someone worth my time."
