The beast fell with a second shot from the gun. It let out one of those horrifying screams before going still, and Kade climbed to his feet.
"Hold it right there!" The gunman pointed at him. "Don't move!"
It had been years since Kade had last heard someone speak English. The language was like a shock to his brain, dousing it in familiarity.
Raising his hands in surrender, he got back down on his knees. "Don't shoot! My name is Kade Sinclair. I'm a physicist from the facility! I've been stranded in this dimension for almost four years."
The man squinted suspiciously at him, then lowered his weapon. "Sergeant Peter Cornwall. I've been here for a week."
"Is there anyone else with you?"
"You're about to find out." The Sergeant had Kade follow him back to his camp. Along the way, there were even more patches of greenery, with plants native to Earth.
When they arrived at the Sergeant's camp, there were four more people with small tents pitched around a fire. The clearing was large enough to have a vine covered object that he suspected to be a small plane.
The people observed Kade's strange clothes while the man led him to a log so he could sit.
"Where's the doc?" Peter barked.
"Over here." A woman emerged from a tent. She was wearing a long white coat, with large pockets and a small first aid kit in hand. "We heard the gunshots. Did you get hurt...Who is this?"
"He says he's Kade Sinclair."
"The man who broke the portal?"
"Excuse me?" Kade exclaimed. "I didn't break anything!"
"Shut up!" Peter ordered. "We've seen the footage."
"I don't know what you've been told but it's a lie!" Kade glared. "Was it Xavier? Did he say I broke it?"
The butt of the man's gun hit him in the head, sending stars across his vision. Kade cupped his new injury and groaned in pain.
"Oh come on now Sargent!" The doctor rushed to Kade and inspected him.
"He needs to learn how to listen. When I say 'shut up', I mean I'll make him if I have to. He's not part of our group anyway."
"But you could try talking first! How are we going to learn how he's survived all this time if you beat him to death?"
The sergeant rolled his eyes and stormed off. Kade gingerly felt the new bump on his head and was glad there was no sign of blood.
"I'm sorry about him." The Doc offered some ibuprofen. "My name is Cecelia Corduroy. You can call me Doctor Corduroy."
"Thanks." He took the pills and noticed the other members of the camp had come to sit with him.
Two of them were chubby men. One had a grown out beard and thick glasses. The other man had short blond hair and wore a dark blue polo shirt. Then there was a beanpole looking man with sideburns, and a woman wearing shorts and a plain white blouse.
"So the facility fixed the portal?" He started.
The bearded man shook his head. "They say it's fixed, but I'd say it's anything but that. Every time they turn it on, it punches a new hole between worlds. And it takes ages to fix."
"Lucy's plane got caught in one of those wormholes while flying over the building." The beanpole pointed.
"So it was your plane!" Kade exclaimed. "That's why I'm here. I thought you were a search party."
