The walk to the Grand Librarium was steeped in anticipation. Sieg and Arcia moved quickly, the fading light urging them onward. The spires of the ancient library soon came into view, their ornate carvings whispering of forgotten secrets. Within its vast halls, the scent of parchment and candle wax greeted them, the quiet hum of magic lingering in the air.
They began their search methodically, sifting through dusty tomes and fragile scrolls, the weight of their task pressing heavily on their shoulders.
“This could take forever,” Arcia sighed, flipping through a volume on planar disruptions.
Sieg nodded. “But it’s our best chance. If the answer’s anywhere, it’s here.”
Just as frustration began to settle, a soft voice broke the silence. “Looking for something, are we?”
They turned to see a man stepping out from between the shelves. He was cloaked in deep crimson, his face partially obscured by a hood, but his emerald eyes shone with a peculiar light.
“Who are you?” Sieg demanded, instinctively tightening his grip on his sword.
“Someone who knows what you seek,” the man said smoothly. “And perhaps... how to help you.”
With a deliberate motion, he set an ornately carved wooden box on the table. The runes engraved on its surface shimmered faintly, resonating with the energy Sieg and Arcia had been tracking. The man opened the box to reveal two items: an ancient book bound in dark leather, its cover etched with glowing sigils, and a shard of gleaming metal radiating raw power.
Arcia’s eyes narrowed. “A legion relic,” she said, recognizing the fragment.
“Indeed,” the man replied. “A piece of great value to someone who commands legions as you do, Sieg.” He turned to the swordsman. “And this book... it holds the knowledge to harness such power. But to claim them, there is a price.”
“What price?” Sieg asked, his tone cautious.
The man smiled, producing a worn map. “I require a lost scroll. It lies in the ruins of a forgotten city, here.” He pointed to a marked location.
Arcia leaned over the map, her sharp eyes catching the symbols scattered across it. “These glyphs,” she said, tracing them with her finger. “They correspond to elemental seals.”
The man nodded. “Precisely. Break the seals, and the elemental djinns bound to them will be freed. Together, they can stabilize the portal’s chaotic energy and close it for good. You’ll find their locations here.”
Sieg studied the map closely, his mind racing with possibilities. Arcia broke the silence. “And the relic? What does it do?”
“It enhances your legions’ power,” the man explained. “Stronger, faster, deadlier. A tool any summoner would covet. Retrieve the scroll, and it’s yours.”
Sieg frowned, his hand brushing the hilt of his sword. “Thanatos and my other legions have never failed me. Why would I need this relic?”
Arcia tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her gaze. “You’re not even a little tempted?”
Sieg shrugged. “We have bigger priorities.”
They closed the book, committing the map’s symbols to memory. As they exited the library, a commotion erupted nearby. Townsfolk were fleeing in panic, their screams cutting through the still night.
Arcia instinctively drew her pistols. “Looks like our next challenge just found us.”
Sieg tightened his grip on his blade. “Let’s see what we’re up against.”
