Sieg's breath quickened as he felt the unmistakable pull of energy surging through the air—a power too potent to ignore. It reverberated in his chest, aligning with the rhythm of his heartbeat. Beside him, Arcia moved with a steady grace, her twin pistols holstered but ready. Their bond was unspoken yet palpable, forged through countless battles and shared dangers.
The gleam of his sword was the first sign. Ancient runes etched along its blade began to pulse, casting flickering patterns across the damp earth.
“We’re close,” Arcia said, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade.
The source of the energy became apparent as they stepped into the clearing. The sorcerer lay lifeless on the ground, his robes torn and stained with blood. Sieg’s eyes darkened.
“This is where we fought Delacroix,” he murmured, kneeling by the body. The memory of that battle still haunted him. Delacroix had been a formidable foe, consumed by his dark ambitions. The remnants of that conflict now hung heavy in the air.
Arcia scanned the perimeter, her pistols in hand. “This doesn’t feel right,” she said. “Something’s still here.”
No sooner had she spoken than shadows began to coalesce. From the darkness emerged monstrous forms—distorted figures, their shapes half-mad with the energy of the open portal nearby. Sieg and Arcia reacted in tandem, their movements a practiced dance of destruction.
Arcia’s magical dual pistols sang through the night, each shot weaving through the air with unerring precision. Sieg called forth Thanatos, one of his most loyal legions. The summoned entity materialized with an ear-splitting roar, its massive frame towering over the battlefield.
The fight was brutal but brief. The monsters fell one by one, dissipating into the ether from which they had emerged. But the portal remained, a swirling vortex of chaotic energy that defied their attempts to close it.
“We need to find a way to seal this,” Sieg said, his tone grim.
Arcia nodded. “Maybe the sorcerer can give us answers. Or what’s left of him.”
They returned to the corpse. Arcia’s sharp eyes scanned the intricate wounds while Sieg examined the magical residue clinging to the sorcerer’s body.
“Whoever did this is still out there,” Arcia concluded, holstering her pistols. “And they’re likely far more dangerous than the portal itself.”
Sieg stood, his sword still faintly glowing. “Then we find them. Someone out there knows what’s going on.”
The two stepped out of the clearing, the fading light of the portal casting long shadows behind them. The hunt had begun.
