Arcia stormed into the village, her weapons blazing as she cut through the fiend-like monsters that had descended upon the helpless villagers. Each shot rang out, sending the creatures reeling, but there were too many of them, overwhelming the defenses of the people.
Sieg, ever the strategist, carefully selected his legion. Blasphemy would be far too dangerous in this tight space—he needed something more controlled. He adjusted his relic, rotating it to summon the appropriate legions.
"Arrogance and Militia," he muttered under his breath.
With a swift motion, he called forth the Legion of Arrogance, using its formidable strength to form a barrier around the villagers, blocking the monstrous onslaught. When the enemies closed in, he shifted to Militia, summoning warriors skilled in close-quarters combat. They tore through the monsters with precision, quickly thinning their ranks.
As the last of the fiends fell, Sieg looked around, searching for any survivors. His eyes fell on a lone villager, who had just emerged from behind a wooden cart, clearly shaken.
"What happened here?" Sieg asked, his voice steady but laced with urgency.
The villager stammered, eyes wide in fear. "The monsters... they just appeared, out of nowhere... like they were teleported."
Arcia, standing beside Sieg, frowned. "Whatever came through that portal, it must have had summoning and teleportation powers."
Before they could say more, a chilling voice echoed through the air.
"That's right," the voice said, dripping with malice.
A strange figure materialized before them, its form flickering between solid and shadow. It was like a creature made from pure darkness, its shape constantly shifting.
Without warning, the creature began to transform, twisting and warping until it became a living shadow, its edges dissolving into the air.
Sieg cursed under his breath, quickly switching his relic. This time, he summoned Thanatos, the Legion of Death. The ground trembled as the undead legionnaires rose to his command.
He and Arcia charged together, attacking the shadow creature with all their might. But the blows passed right through her, as if she were nothing more than smoke.
The creature laughed, a sound that sent shivers down their spines. "You're mildly entertaining," it said, its voice mocking. "But not nearly enough." And with that, she vanished, melting into the shadows as though she had never been there at all.
Sieg lowered his weapon, frustration evident in his eyes. "My legions are useless against her. Not even Thanatos could scratch her."
Arcia, her eyes steely with determination, turned to him. "Then let's go find that scroll, then. We need something more."
Sieg nodded. "Scroll it is."
The two of them made their way to the old destroyed city, their destination clear. Whatever secrets the scroll held, they would need it if they were to stand a chance against the shadow creature that had just eluded them.
