The hospital room was cloaked in a heavy silence, broken only by the rhythmic beeping of Buck's heart monitor. Eddie sat slumped in the chair beside the bed, exhaustion carved into his features. His hand rested against Buck's, their fingers loosely intertwined, the only reassurance Eddie had that Buck was still there with him.

He hadn't left the hospital since the ambulance had brought Buck in. He couldn't. Every time he thought about leaving, even for a moment, the image of Buck crumpling to the ground, blood pooling beneath him, flashed through his mind like a living nightmare. Eddie had been through combat, had seen more horrors than he cared to remember, but nothing had shaken him like the sight of Buck bleeding out.

A sharp, strangled gasp shattered the quiet. Eddie's head snapped up. He leaned forward, instantly alert, his eyes locking onto Buck as his body tensed. At first, it was just a small movement—Buck's fingers curling into the sheets, his breathing hitching. But then, his chest began to rise and fall rapidly, and his face twisted in panic.

"Buck?" Eddie said, his voice a careful mixture of calm and concern. He rose to his feet, hovering over the bed as Buck's breathing quickened, each breath more frantic than the last. "Hey, Buck, it's okay. You're safe."

But Buck didn't hear him. His hands clawed at the blanket, his head jerking from side to side as if trying to shake off invisible chains. His lips moved, a jumble of barely audible words spilling out in a terrified rush.

"No... no, stop... don't..." The words grew louder, more frantic. "Run... Eddie, run! He's—he's coming!"

"Buck!" Eddie's heart pounded as he reached for Buck's shoulders, his hands gentle but firm. "Hey, it's me. It's Eddie. You're safe. You're in the hospital, Buck. Look at me."

Buck's eyes flew open, wide with terror, darting around the room like a trapped animal searching for an escape. They were glassy, unfocused, as if he wasn't really there. His chest heaved with every shallow, panicked breath, and his hands clawed at the air, trying to fight off something only he could see.

"He's going to kill you!" Buck screamed, his voice raw and hoarse. Tears streamed down his face, unchecked and unrelenting. "I couldn't stop him—I couldn't stop him—Eddie, run! Please, just run!"

Eddie's heart shattered at the sound of Buck's voice, so full of fear and anguish. "Buck, stop," he said, his own voice breaking. He moved his hands to Buck's face, cradling it gently as he tried to force their eyes to meet. "Look at me. It's Eddie. I'm here. You're safe. He's not here."

But Buck was inconsolable, his sobs wracking his body as he clutched at Eddie's arms like a drowning man. "No, no, you don't understand!" he cried. His breaths were coming in shallow, rapid gasps, each one more desperate than the last. "He's going to come back. He's going to kill you—I can't—I can't—"

"Breathe with me, Buck," Eddie said urgently, his voice trembling with emotion. He pressed their foreheads together, trying to ground Buck in the present. "Listen to my voice. Just breathe with me. In, out. You can do this."

But Buck couldn't. His entire body shook, his lungs refusing to cooperate as he gasped for air. His hands flew to his chest, clutching at the hospital gown as if trying to physically force the air into his lungs. "I—I can't breathe!" he choked out, his voice strangled with panic. "Eddie, I can't—I can't—"

Eddie's own panic rose like a tidal wave, but he pushed it down, focusing entirely on Buck. "Yes, you can," he said, his voice steady despite the tears streaming down his face. "I'm right here. I've got you. Just hold on to me."

Buck's knees buckled, his strength giving out as his body was wracked with uncontrollable sobs. Eddie caught him, lowering him gently back onto the bed and wrapping his arms around him. "I've got you," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I've got you, Buck. You're not alone."

For what felt like an eternity, Buck sobbed uncontrollably in Eddie's arms, his entire body trembling. The hospital bed creaked beneath their combined weight, but Eddie didn't let go, didn't ease up on his grip. Buck clung to him, his hands fisted in Eddie's shirt, his tears soaking through the fabric.

"I couldn't stop him," Buck whispered brokenly between sobs. "I saw him point the gun at you, and I couldn't stop him. I thought I lost you, Eddie. I thought you were dead."

Eddie's heart ached as he held Buck closer, his own tears falling freely now. "You didn't lose me," he said firmly, his voice trembling. "I'm here. I'm alive. And I'm not going anywhere, Buck. I swear to you."

"I was so scared," Buck admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. His sobs began to subside, but his body still shook with the aftershocks of his panic. "I thought I lost everything. I thought—"

"You didn't," Eddie interrupted gently. He pulled back just enough to look into Buck's tear-streaked face, his hands still cradling his cheeks. "You didn't lose me, and you're not going to. I'm right here, and I'm not going anywhere."

Buck nodded weakly, his gaze dropping to his lap as fresh tears spilled down his cheeks. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I didn't mean to—"

"Hey, no," Eddie said quickly, his voice firm but gentle. He tilted Buck's face up to meet his gaze. "You don't have to apologize. Not for this. You've been through hell, Buck. It's okay to feel like this."

Buck didn't respond, his bottom lip trembling as he fought to keep his emotions in check. Eddie sighed softly, pressing a gentle kiss to Buck's temple before leaning his forehead against his. "We're going to get through this," he murmured. "Together. You hear me? One step at a time."

Buck nodded again, his tears slowing as Eddie's words finally began to soothe him. For the first time since he woke up, his breathing started to even out, the tension in his body slowly dissipating.

Eddie stayed where he was, his arms still wrapped protectively around Buck, his presence a constant reminder that Buck wasn't alone. As the minutes stretched into hours, the room grew quiet once more, the beeping of the heart monitor a steady, comforting rhythm.

But Eddie didn't let go. He couldn't. Not yet. Not until he was absolutely sure Buck knew, deep down, that he wasn't alone—and never would be.
