Buck sat on the cold bench in the locker room, his hands clasped tightly in his lap as if holding himself together was the only thing keeping him from falling apart. His eyes were red and swollen, his face pale, and his breathing unsteady. The events of the last few hours weighed on him like an anchor, dragging him into an ocean of despair he couldn't swim out of.
The sound of the door creaking open made him flinch. Eddie stepped in first, his boots scuffing softly against the floor, followed closely by Bobby. Neither spoke immediately, giving Buck the space to acknowledge them on his own terms.
"Hey, Buck," Eddie began softly, his voice careful, almost hesitant. "We just wanted to check on you."
Buck didn't lift his head. He stared at his hands, his knuckles white from the tension in his grip. "I'm fine," he muttered, though the quiver in his voice betrayed him.
Eddie exchanged a glance with Bobby, who stepped closer, pulling up a chair and sitting across from Buck. His steady, fatherly presence filled the room, grounding yet firm.
"You've been through hell, Buck," Bobby said gently. "Nobody expects you to be okay right now. But we need to talk about how to keep you safe."
"I don't need anything," Buck said, his voice tight. "I can handle it."
Eddie crouched beside Buck, placing a hand on his arm. The warmth of his touch was a stark contrast to the cold that seemed to radiate from Buck's trembling body. "Buck, you don't have to do this alone. You've got us. And you've got Athena. She can help."
The mention of Athena made Buck's head snap up, panic flashing in his eyes. "No. No cops. I'm not dragging anyone else into this."
"She's not just a cop," Bobby reminded him. "She's family. And if anyone can help you get through this, it's her."
Buck shook his head violently, tears welling up again. "You don't get it. If I tell her, it'll make it real. I can't—" His voice cracked, and he turned his face away, a tear slipping down his cheek. "I can't say it out loud."
Eddie's grip on Buck's arm tightened just slightly, his tone steady but imploring. "Buck, what Phillip did to you, to your mum... it's not your fault. None of it is. But you need help. He's dangerous, and we can't protect you on our own."
Buck's chest heaved as he fought against the growing weight of their words. He felt like a cornered animal, terrified and desperate to escape.
"I don't want to talk about it," Buck said weakly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Bobby leaned forward, his gaze unwavering. "I know it's hard, Buck. I can't imagine how much pain you're in right now. But I need you to trust us on this. We just want to help. We're not going to let you go through this alone."
Buck bit his lip hard, trying to keep the dam of emotions from breaking again. He felt like he was being torn apart—every piece of him exposed and raw. He wanted to scream, to cry, to run, but he couldn't move. He was frozen in place, trapped by his own fear.
"Buck," Eddie said softly, shifting so he was directly in Buck's line of sight. "It's okay to be scared. It's okay to not know what to do. But you have to let someone in. Let Athena in. She'll know what to do."
Buck's shoulders slumped, the fight draining out of him as his tears spilled over. He nodded, barely perceptible, his voice cracking as he whispered, "I'll think about it."
Eddie and Bobby exchanged a relieved glance, knowing that even the smallest step forward was a victory.
"We'll be here every step of the way," Bobby promised, his voice steady and reassuring.
Eddie gave Buck's arm a gentle squeeze. "You're not alone, Buck. Not anymore."
As the words sank in, Buck let out a shaky breath, a flicker of relief breaking through the storm. But the fear still lingered, heavy in his chest, a constant reminder of the darkness he wasn't sure he could escape from.
