It was raining when Regina stood in front of the door to Y/N's apartment. The sound of the rain on the pavement, a steady tap that seemed to mirror the hammering of her heart, filled the silence between each of her breaths.
She had been here countless times before, but today felt different. The weight of the situation, the tension that had been building between them for weeks, pressed down on her like a thick fog.
Her hand hovered over the doorbell, her finger trembling. It had been so easy, months ago, when they'd first kissed. So easy when it was just the two of them, wrapped up in each other's arms. The world outside had seemed irrelevant back then, like nothing mattered except for the soft touch of Y/N's skin on hers, the way their laughter echoed through their shared space, their sanctuary.
But now, everything had changed. There was no sanctuary anymore. Only a hollow, aching space between them, filled with things unsaid and words left hanging in the air like broken promises.
Regina pressed the doorbell, and the sound of it rang out, sharp and clear in the heavy silence. She hadn't been expecting an immediate response—Y/N had been distant lately, withdrawn. And yet, when the door creaked open, there she was.
Y/N stood in the doorway, her expression unreadable. Her eyes, usually so warm and expressive, were guarded now, like they were hiding something. Her hair, usually messy in a way that Regina found endearing, hung limp around her face. She didn't say anything at first, just looked at Regina, as if waiting for her to speak.
"Hi," Regina said, her voice soft, tentative. She could barely make herself meet Y/N's gaze. The distance between them felt unbearable. "Can we talk?"
Y/N stepped aside, her body language closed off, and Regina walked into the apartment, feeling the chill of the space seep into her bones. Everything seemed different—sterile, even. It wasn't that Y/N had changed the furniture or rearranged the place, but something had shifted in the atmosphere. A sense of something gone wrong, a dissonance that she couldn't name but could feel deep in her gut.
Y/N didn't close the door, just stood in the hallway, her back to Regina. The silence stretched on, and Regina felt it wrapping around her, making it harder to breathe. It was always like this now. The silence between them had become a thing of its own, growing larger with each passing day, and it seemed like there was no way to escape it.
"I've been trying to figure out what's going on with us," Regina said, her voice fragile. She turned to face Y/N, taking a tentative step closer. "I don't understand... what happened. We used to talk about everything. We used to be so—" She trailed off, her voice breaking.
Y/N finally turned, her eyes narrowing slightly. "You don't understand?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper, but there was something sharp in the way she said it. Something hurt. "You really don't know?"
Regina's heart sank. "What do you mean? I—I don't know what happened to us. We've been distant for weeks, and I don't know why."
Y/N's lips trembled slightly, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. "It's not just that, Regina," she said, her voice low, almost as if she was speaking to herself. "It's... it's everything. I've tried, okay? I've tried to make things work. But you don't get it. You never have. I've been drowning, and you just—" She broke off, the words hanging in the air like unfinished sentences.
Regina felt the sting of Y/N's words, but she pushed through it, stepping closer, her heart aching with a mix of frustration and confusion. "I don't get it? What do you mean? You don't have to do this alone, Y/N. I'm right here. I've always been right here."
