Suspicious

Well, really, welcome to Chicago. Anna can see a real city for the first time in her life. She can smell the fresh air, not. Yuck, that was some nasty smelling air. Anna thought to herself, "how is this kind of nasty smelling, city, smog filled air, supposed to clear my senses?" Then she took a more observant look at all her surroundings. Wow, it was big...too big. She suddenly felt like an ant in the middle of a monster's stomach. She was so used to the fresh ocean breeze with the little log cabin with the small landscaped yard in the back and the ocean in the front. Now, what was she supposed to do with herself? She suddenly realized how little money she had in her pocket also. A few dollars were not going to go far in this huge city.

A smell that was not gross smelling wafted over. It was a hamburger smell. My oh my, she was hungry. Anna had just noticed how much her stomach was really growling. She needed to be careful with her money. The last thing she wanted was to hit the money jam that she already foresaw as being in the future. She knew she had to do something about it. This is a start to a whole new life. She knows she needs to keep a positive attitude. "A positive attitude will help me out, even if it kills me, " she determined to do so.

She walked and walked and walked some more, for what seemed like a ton of miles. She did not see any sight that welcomed her senses. She was tired. Anna thought about giving up, with her hunger and exhaustion, was this even worth it? She questioned herself many times. If she gave up now, she would be giving in to the failure that she was running away from in the first place.

She had to give in. Her muscles ached. Anna said to herself, "I will just sit and rest for a little while, then I will get back to it." She did not think the idea hurt anything so she sat down on the nearest rock. It was a sculpture but it worked. People sure were creative when they seemed to get bored with the city life. The sculpture was detailed, yet the perfect size and shape to serve the purpose. She was too tired to look. When she had recovered a little bit, she looked at it closer. It was a turtle and the details in the shell were excruciatingly precise. Suddenly, she felt bad for sitting on someone's art work. She jumped up. Just as she did, she bumped into someone.

She clumsily fell. He reached his hand down. Anna wanted to be stubborn and refuse his offer, but who could refuse his kind generosity. She reached up scared of what would happen next. He smiled at her and asked, "Are you okay?" "I don't seem to be majorly hurt," Anna replied. Anxiousness built up in her stomach and mixed with the hungry feeling making her even more nervous. She looked up into his eyes and felt a small calm. That was the weirdest thing that had happened to her, but not the worst. It was strange. She shook the strangers hand and said thank you. Her mind pleaded for him to go away. She still was not too fond of guys, especially after the past which she had already endured.

His gaze shifted but he did not go away. He was stunned just as much or more than she was. He wanted to know more about her, but decided better of asking. She looked scared like a deer in the headlines. The last thing he wanted was to make her run away. She was beautiful. He did not dare stare her down or even look her up and down. He did not want to make her think ill of him from the very beginning. She was new in town and he knew it. He needed to think fast. He was not a creep and he needed to prove it to her. She probably already thought he was creepy just showing up out of the blue like that. His brain was not the best at thinking fast. He searched his mind to find something to say. He probably already looked suspicious. The last thing he wanted to portray, was to make the suspicious feeling rise up more.

By the time he looked up to open his mouth, she was about getting jittery. He could tell from her anxiousness that she was about to walk away. The first thing he could think to say, he said. He offered her a job at the diner. He was hesitant when he asked, yet it seemed to get the point across. She shyly said yes. He shyly replied, " Oh, okay, well, then... see you tomorrow at 5 Am then, and we'll see how you do and get you started." She nodded. Anna could hardly contain herself from jumping up and down. He pointed at the diner. She knew where to go in the morning. She could hardly believe her luck. There was already good luck in this city. It was proven right then and there. Now...if only...she could find a place to stay....

These surroundings were starting to help her. She was already making her way in the world. Every once in a while she heard some strange noises behind her but she decided they were nothing. Her imagination probably just needed to calm down. She was so ready to really move on. For the first time in her life, she was doing something, and this something was good.

Beauty is as beauty does. Her super grandmother who had since passed had told her the amazingly true saying. It would always stick with Anna. She determined to do better. She was beautiful but she still needed to grow in character. She was already good, but good was not good enough for her. She always needed to strife for better. She resolved to improve from the inside out.

The city was hers. Hope was really starting to settle in. She could feel it from her head to her toe. Little did she know what was going to come....
