I came rushing to my room. He hugged me. For what? What was he trying to prove-that he cared about me? No, not at all. To him, I'm just some ugly, stupid girl he married against his will, and now he's stuck with me for a year. I won't tolerate his insults. If he hates me so much, he won't have to see me anymore. I've decided to vacate his room next week. Until then, I'll avoid him as much as possible.
Trying not to dwell on these thoughts and ruin my mood, I took a bath, changed into comfortable clothes, and let exhaustion take over. As memories of my mother flooded my mind and I got lost in imaginary scenarios, I eventually fell asleep.
When I woke up, I remembered I had a doctor's appointment, but honestly, I was feeling much better. The swelling had gone down, and I decided to skip the visit for now. Maybe I'd go later if needed. Instead, I started debating whether to go to the office or work from home. After some back-and-forth, I decided to go to the office.
As I got ready and stepped out of my room, I heard a woman laughing from the stairs. Curious, I walked out and saw Dr. Tanya with him. They were laughing together, looking so comfortable-as if they were deeply in love. They seemed so happy together. These two people should get married and live happily. What am I doing between them?
Panicked, I went back to my room. The thought of her finding me here unsettled me. I decided to take my morning stand-up call from home, hoping she'd leave before I had to go out. An hour passed, but she was still there.
I had already informed Celine not to disturb me during work, so at least I had that under control. Feeling hungry, I grabbed a protein bar. Still restless, I stepped onto the balcony for fresh air. To my dismay, I saw them in the garden, busy with some plants, looking perfect together. They both were made for each other, and here I am meddling with God's plan. That's why nothing is going well for me.
I decided this was the right time to leave the house. I gathered my belongings, put on my boots, and headed toward the main door. Just as I was about to leave, Dr. Tanya called out my name.
"Riya, is that you? What are you doing here now?"
I glanced at Mr. Rathore, who seemed ready to say something, but I spoke first. "I just came to thank Mr. Rathore for recommending me to you."
She smiled warmly. "Oh, it's no problem at all. Sorry, Riya, I didn't recognize you earlier. You've become so beautiful that I almost didn't recognize you!"
She caught me off guard. "Classmates?" I replied, feigning confusion.
"Aren't you from Jamshedpur Convent?" she asked.
"Yes, I am," I admitted, pretending to recall.
"Oh my God, Tanya!" I exclaimed. "I always knew you'd do well in life."
We exchanged polite smiles, and she asked how I ended up in Paris. I explained, "I work for a French company, and that's how I'm here. As for Mr. Rathore, our grandparents were friends, so they suggested I connect with him when I moved here."
She beamed. "That's wonderful! It's good that you found him. He's so kind and charming."
I nodded. "Yes, Mr. Rathore is very kind."
Hearing this, he smiled-one of those smug, gangster-like smiles. He was annoyingly cute when he smiled, and I hated myself for noticing.
Tanya suddenly asked, "Why do you call Agastya 'Mr. Rathore'? Don't tell me you guys are still fighting your cold war."
Before I could think of a better answer, Agastya spoke with a mischievous grin. "Yes, Riya, why do you call me 'Mr. Rathore'?"
I wanted to break his teeth. But I wasn't going to back down. "Well," I said sweetly, "even though we were classmates, Mr. Rathore told me himself to address him formally since he's so rich and powerful."
His surprise was evident, as was Tanya's. She looked at him disapprovingly. "Agastya, I know you don't get along with everyone, but you shouldn't act this way."
He was confused and eyeing me angrily.
I smiled and said, "Thank you, Mr. Rathore and Dr. Tanya, for all your help. My work here is done, so I'll take my leave."
Tanya insisted I stay for lunch, but I declined, saying I had an important meeting. She tried to persuade me, mentioning that Agastya would be leaving for New York for two weeks. That was news to me, but apparently, she knew his schedule better than I did.
When she shared this information, I found Mr. Rathore eyeing me as if he wanted a reaction. I kept my calm and said, "Oh, happy journey, Mr. Rathore. I should get going now."
I said my goodbyes and left for the office. My mind was racing with thoughts of Tanya, his trip, and everything in between.
Just as I started focusing on work, my phone rang. It was an unknown number, so I ignored it. The phone rang again, and this time I answered. It was a wrong number. Another call followed shortly after, so I silenced my phone and put it aside, immersing myself in work.
Honestly, I felt relieved. Two weeks without Mr. Gangster would be a blessing.
