Chapter 13
October 30, 2011 Annapolis, MD
“Jaxon, please remember that they still think of me as Preston’s widow and that they know I’m pregnant?” Chey said.
“I don’t really care what they think,” Jaxon said pulling her into his arms, her stomach stopped him from pulling her flushed against his body, but neither of them cared.
“What would they think of me?”
“Hopefully they will think: I’m so happy that Chey and Jax found each other. They genuinely seem to be happy.”
“What fantasy world do you live in Jax?”
“Look, aren’t you the main person who said that secrets hurt people? Let’s not forget that Preston made that mistake and…”
“We aren’t going to talk about what Preston did or didn’t do. We are going to keep this between us two at least for a while.” Before he could answer the doorbell rang and Chey turned away to go answer it.
Burt stood on the front porch with a box wrapped in pink paper. He stepped in and pulled Chey into a hug, kissing her cheek at the same time.
“How is our little princess doing?” Burt asked placing a hand on her belly. She’d learned early on that once people found out you were pregnant they were going to touch your stomach weather you wanted them too or not. Only the polite ones asked first.
“She’s going to be a soccer player I’m sure,” Chey said. The doorbell rang again. “Let me go get that, you go ahead and find Jax. I think he’s in the living room.”
“Hey,” Burt said finding Jaxon in the living room. He was hanging a pink streamer from sconce to sconce.
“Hey,” Jaxon said still concentrating on his task.
“Oh how the mighty have fallen. So have you hit that yet or are you just going to keep acting like you aren’t head over heels in love with her?” Burt asked. Jaxon froze, but didn’t say anything.
“What makes you think she’s ready for anything after losing Preston?”
“I’m not stupid…” his words were cut off as Kobe Diaz another team member joined them placing his the gift he’d bought for the baby on the table. After that it didn’t take long before all the team and the other two wives in the group had arrived. The table was over flowing with gifts for the baby. She’d never thought that men would care to come to a baby shower, but Jaxon wasn’t going to allow her not to have one.
Jaxon rushed over to her pulling her into the front of the group. She waited patiently as everyone turned to give them their full attention. Once they had everyone’s attention, Jaxon spun her toward him and kissed her. There were gasps throughout the group and Burt smiled and put his hand out to collect the money that Kobe owed him.
It took a moment for Chey to realize what was happening, but the second she did she pushed Jaxon away with all her strength. Then she smacked him across the face and ran from the room embarrassed. Jaxon held in his laughter until after she’d left the room and looked at his team members. They all had smiles on their faces; however Danielle and Shari were giving him the evil eye.
“What?” he asked them innocently.
“Something tells us that she wasn’t ready to out your relationship,” Shari said.
“What makes you think that?” Jaxon asked with a grin.
“We’ll see if you still think that sleeping on the couch tonight,” Danielle said.
“I guess I better go smooth over some feathers. By the way if anyone says anything out of turn to her…”
“Why would any of us do that?” Burt asked. They all knew what Jaxon was talking about, but they’d hoped he would know them better than that.
“That’s the reaction I was hoping for, but she was afraid that Preston’s fears were justified.” He didn’t wait for their reactions he just turned and headed up to their bedroom. He opened the door to see her doubled over leaning onto the bed. “Chey!”
“Oh, go away you douche,” she said through clenched teeth.
“Baby, are you okay?”
“No, I’m going into labor and I want you to go away now,” She said straightening up.
“Okay, uh first of all I think you should know that everyone downstairs is very happy for us. They actually had a team pool going on to find out how long it would be before you took pity on me. Secondly, you should forgive me for wanting the world to know that I’m in love with you. Third, you can be mad at me all you want after I take you to the hospital…”
“You had no right to out us until I was ready.” She said now that the contraction was over she was able to think clearly.
“Chey, we can argue after you have the baby.”
“It’s going to be hours before I have the baby,” she said on the outside she looked calm, but she was freaking out on the inside and this argument was going to keep her calm until she got to the hospital.
“Okay at least let me take you to the hospital so the doctors can monitor you.” He said rushing to the closet and grabbing her pre-packed overnight bag. He wrapped his other arm around her waist and ushered her down the stairs.
“We have a house full of people and they probably just got the show of their lives and think I’m the team door knob…”
“The team door knob?” he looked at her puzzled.
“Yeah, everyone gets a turn.”
He laughed, but quickly stopped.
“No one thinks that,” he said then he turned toward the living room. “Sorry, but it seems that my beautiful girlfriend is going into labor. You guys can follow us to the hospital if you like or just wait for my call it’s up to you.”
