Night lights
Are peculiar things.

Small children
Turn them on
So the monsters
Under beds and in closets
Stay away.

Young adults
Living alone
For the first time
Use them to ward off
Bad guys
Wanting to break
In and steal,
As if a baby light
Bulb will protect them
From this.

Parents give them
To babies
So the dark stays
Away and doesn't
Creep up
And steal their
Innocence.

But what I wonder
Is what's in the dark
That makes us
So wary?
