How long
Had it been like this?

How long
Had she come into his room
Late at night
Rubbed his back,
Told him it was alright
When really,
It wasn't.

How long
Had he been lying
To his dad
To his teacher
To himself
That his mother loved him
And didn't want to hurt him?

How long
Had her husband
Turned a blind eye
To what was happening,
Telling himself
That if nobody knew,
It must mean
nothing was happening?

How long
Had the teacher
Suspected,
Spent countless nights
Worrying,
And yet said nothing?

How long
Had his mother,
Whom he loved and trusted,
Been molesting him
Every night
For who knows how long?

And while everybody knew,
Nobody said anything.
