Callie's prospective
******************************

I sit in silence as the boys barricade the windows and any other opening in Hayden's house. Scarlett is on the computer, trying to find something to help us. A survivor note, information about the infection, news forecasting ways to get help, anything really.
"Nail please." I silently hand Hayden the nail he asked for. He grabs it from my open palm and pounds it the wooden plank, pinning it against the wall.
Sweat glistens on his brow as he works. He and Ivan has spent the last 3 hours closing pretty much opening in the house on the first floor multiple times over. Again and again, their reasoning does make at least some sense but this seems over the top. A human probably couldn't even get through this, let alone a zombie!
He goes to grab another board when I grab his shoulder, pulling his attention to me.
"Hey I think it's fine." I smile, trying to reassure him. He looks at me with this unreadable expression on his face.
"We don't know that." He shrugs my hand off and grabs at the board again. "We don't know anything about these things, so I'm preparing for anything."
I huff at him and sit back down on the chair as he works, thinking about Charlie. She's smart, if she escaped where would she go? Home? To our school? No her classroom was on the second floor, they would have been cornered. She would have jumped, maybe. But what if-
"Callie." I'm thrown from my thoughts by Hayden waving a hand in my face. "You still with me?"
I glare at his laughing form before nodding my head.
"I was just thinking." I state, folding my arms as he goes back to work.
"Bout what?" He pounds the nail into the board a few times before looking to me.
"I don't know really." I suddenly feel very uncomfortable under his intense gaze.
"You know you can talk to us right." He said looking me in the eyes, a concerned look tracing his figures.
I bit my lip and smile.
"Of course I do, but honestly I'm not even sure what I'm thinking about."
I grin at him for a while before he shrugs his shoulders and turns back to his work.
"Your loss, I'm a great advice giver."
He mockingly teases me. I roll my eyes at his tactics and mutter under my breath.
"Too bad." I stand up and give his shoulder a light shove before leaving the room. Hayden's laughter follows me as I wander into the office, going to stand behind Scarlet. I rest my hands on her shoulders and set my chin on her head.
"Have you found anything?" I ask her as my eyes follow the cruiser as she clicks on yet another website. I hear her huff and she clicks on once again another browser only to find nothing.
"Nope, nothing."
I frown at her tired features. She's slumped back into the chair with a blank expression on her face. I sit down next to her and grab her hand.
"You can stop looking now, it's ok." I stare at the blank unresponsive screen. "It's not going to help us if the internet is down."
Scarlett just sorta nods her head in acknowledgement before turning off the computer. I let a small victory smile as I help her into a standing position. I pull her along with me to check on Ivan and Hayden, who are still pounding boards into the walls.
"Hows it going in here?" I ask Ivan, frowning at his sweaty head. He just turns to me and sticks a thumbs up in the air.
"Im pretty darn fantastic." He mumbles under his breath. Scarlett shakes her head at his actions. Im about to make a joke about his snarky comeback when Hayden plows through the door. I don't know about the others but i jumped about three feet in the air.
"Theres someone outside, I can see them across the street!" His eyes flash with a mix of delight and undeniable fear. This would be the first person that any of us has seen alive since we parted at my house.
"Do you have any idea who it is?" Ivan asks standing up, his attitude changes from the grumpy act i had just seen.
"Can we even trust them?" I question the boys before they get us all killed by inviting a stranger into our safe haven. Scarlett looks at me with a unreadable expression before replying.
"Only one way to find out." shrugging her shoulders Scarlett turns on her heel and walks with a purpose to the front door. I just stare at the back of her head with my mouth hanging wide open in shock. I notice the boys share a quick look before quickly following close behind Scarlett. Hayden at least tries to be sneaky about pulling his knife from his pockets, while Ivan practically checks himself out in the reflection as he walks. I roll my eyes at him before leaving the room, taking up the back in our small group. As we near the front door I let out a small chuckle.
"Why is it that every opening in the house is closed off BUT the front door?" I question with a small laugh.
Hayden looks at me with a expression of horror.
"Oh. well." He awkwardly scratches his neck and he comes up with an excuse. "It locks?"
I shake my head and with a small smile and push him forward.
Scarlett is already running down the driveway with Ivan close on her heels.
"Hello? Excuse me?" Ivan calls out to the empty street. I notice a body near a car on the opposite side, crouched in the shadows. My heart starts racing a million beats per second. The body slowly stands up and I Immediately recognize the shaggy blonde hair.
I step forward with a huge grin on my face, "CAMERON!"
Cameron James is Definitely a name I know very well. He's the first person I met this year at the new school. He's also pretty good friends with Ivan and Hayden from what I can tell by the hugs going around. He grins around the group before pulling up his backpack.
"Im so glad i found you guys! I was starting to think that maybe I was the only one left." He frowns after finishing his sentence.
"Dude you haven't seen anyone either?" Ivan questions in a shaky tone. He gives Hayden a side glacé before they continue the conversation.
I open my mouth to start talking when a movement in the distance catches my attention. My eyes follow the lone zombie stumbling along the street, wandering aimlessly without a real destination. Ivan notices my staring and starts toward the monster. Cameron notices his actions and grabs his arm, shaking his head.
"We need to get inside, Zombies never travel alone." He starts walking to the house, motioning for us to follow. "They're like pack creatures, so like avoid them as much as possible."
Glancing back to the creature in the distance I step through the door.
"How do you know so much about these things?" Hayden questions him, locking the door behind him.
Cameron just smirks, his blue eyes gleaming in the dim light.
"My uncles a total nut about apocalypses. You might know him? He's Max Riley's dad. Anyway as a child he taught me everything He knew about everything, from nuclear wars to droughts to aliens and also zombies. I was just going to go look for him but you guys seem like better company. Besides I don't even know where he is right now. Probably buried himself in his safe house the crazed man." Cameron ends, shaking his head. I slowly nod my head at his small speech, this kid always loved talking.
"I'm just going to say you know the most so you lead?" I throw the idea into the air, getting agreements from the guys. I sneak a glance at Scarlett to see her looking out the window with wide eyes.
"Holy crap, thats a lot of zombies." She mumbles under her breath, still staring at the street. Noticing I'm the only one who heard her I peek out the cracks between the boards only to jump away in fright.
"Guys?" I squeak out through clenched teeth, catching the attention of the three boys. "There is about an entire street of zombies passing by right now."
I sneak one more peek at the mass, frozen by the sight before my eyes. Hundreds of those things litter the street, all those dead unseeing eyes and torn falling away skin. I wait until I'm sure none are coming to eat us before stepping back to allow the boys to see. My mind fills with the images of the undead roaming our streets. There were so many of them I couldn't imagine leaving.
Biting my nails I start to wonder.
Do we even have a chance?
