Chapter 5

Callie's prospective

I hear the rest of my friends following me.
"Listen guys, I need to go find my family." Sam called out.
"Du-" I cut Ivan off.
"Sam go, it's ok your family needs to." I turn to the group. "Anyone who wants to go find their family's can go. I'm not forcing anyone to stay, no one is."
Our group starts to leave until it's just me, Scarlet, Ivan and Hayden.
I know Ivan's and Hayden's parents are out of town but Scarlet staying surprised me.
She shrugs, "if I leave I'm dead. My moms still in the kitchen at school anyways. I-I-I can call her. "
She pulls out her phone and dials a number. As the phone rings you puts it on speaker phone.

"Mom?"
"Scarlet dear are you ok?"
"I'm fine, mom you need to get out of there. It's not safe."
"What do you mean?"
"Mom these things," Hayden pipes up, "zombies."
Scarlet visibly shudders.
"The," she pauses, "zombies attack people."
"Honey. I'm fine. I appreciate your concern. Just come here once you guys are done playing your little game. Love you."

Scarlet stares at her phone.
"W-we can just do check on her later."
I shrug.
"The fastest way is past the middle school. Lets go there." lets go check for Charlie. "We can help the kids on the way there." I can search for Charlie.
I start speed walking forcing the group to run to catch up.
"Come on they get out of school soon, we need to warn them it may not be safe at home."
Ivan and Hayden share a look before pulling Scarlet with them.
"We need to hurry." Hayden pulls out his phone. "We have 10 minutes before schools out."
My eyes widen.
"Lets go." I start running, thankful both Ivan and Hayden are on the football team and Scarlet did track in middle school. They matched my quick pace stride for stride.
As we run we see body's some dead, others close to dead. Abandoned cars, blood and guts.
And worst of all, we see those things, the zombies. A pack of maybe 20.
And they are coming right at us.
"Guys, guys, guys, guys."
I'm panicking, "what do we do, WHAT DO WE DO?"
Ivan steps forward, " I got this." He pulls out a knife from his coat.
Scarlet grabs his arm, "Ivan nows not the time to be all heroic!! JUST RUN."
We all turn and start to run. I can't help but chuckle at Ivan's puppy dog face.
"Guys over here!"
Hayden pulls my arm towards a abandoned car and pushed me into the backseat.
Ivan tried to open the drivers door, but Hayden wasn't having it.
"Dude I have to Hotwire with car SO I DRIVE!"
Ivan just nods and bolts to the other side. Hiding the knife back in his pocket.
Scarlet jumps in next to me,
"What's even happening why are there so many, Callie, Callie, whats happening Callie, OMG why are there so many body's! Why?!?"
She was hyperventilating,
"Scarlet, breath it's ok we will be fine just breath in and out."
She grabs my hand, shaking her head, Shes starting to calm down. Hayden jumps into the drivers seat, and starts the car. He drives off, "I know a back way from here to the school."
A thought pops into my head,
"Umm Hayden?" I question, "when did you learn to hot wire a car?"
He laughs, "Callie I live on the wrong side of town, my cousins taught me."
Ivan speaks up, "uh guys."
I cover my mouth, "oh my god, no."
The middle schools surrounded, body's and zombies litter the grounds.
"We are too late." I bury my head into the seat. "NONONO!"
Screw it, I jump towards the door and bolt to the school.
"CALLIE!"
I stop when I almost trip over a body. I scream again. Zombies in the area by now have seen us and are moving towards us.
I feel a pair of arms grab my waist, holding me back.
"CALLIE STOP! IT'S NOT SAFE!"
Tears are streaming down my face freely.
"CHARLIE!" I scream out.
Hayden pulls me back into the car.
"Callie, calm down it's ok." I feel Scarlets arm surround me. I fall into her arms. "Shhh it's ok."
I feel her tears hit the too of my head.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." I mumble into her shirt.
We ride in silence towards the school. Only my quieting sobs are heard. We don't see many alive people. Just zombies, and destruction.
"This is really happening." I stare out the window.
"What was that Callie ?" Hayden pipes up.
"This is really happening, the zombies, death, everything." I look out the window, "how is this even possible?"
"I don't know Callie. I don't know."
