"HEY BOYS!!" Nina yells over the music.
Instead of using the lights, there are LEDs everywhere. The room is lit in several different colours. Glow sticks are on nearly everyone's wrists. Some people drink or dance, sometimes even both. Nina makes her way around the group, giving everyone hugs and handing out glowsticks. Regie somehow has five on each wrist and Kane has already made a necklace out of them.
We make our way around the party, saying hi to the people we know and grabbing drinks. Sooner or later, I run into Jayden.
"YOU MADE IT?" She can barely hear me but she nods.
Jayden then gestures for me to follow her. She opens a door that leads to a deck. There are very few people out here and its significantly more quiet. She settles herself down on the edge of the deck, patting the spot next to her. I take a seat next to her.
She looks up at the stars, "This is better."
I take a glance at her before asking a question that had been circling in my head for days.
"How did you know you loved me?"
She freezes. Looking away from the stars and at me, a sad smile appears on her face. "I don't know. I mean, I still can't tell if I do or not, it's such a weird feeling. How did you know?"
"I don't know either. I'm not even sure that it is love or if I just like having your company." I pause. "That sounded bad."
She nods, "I get that feeling. You like Justin, right?"
My eyes widen and I look at her. My hands are fidgeting with my shirt and I'm only now realizing how nervous I am. All I can do is drink some of the alcohol in my cup.
"I figured." She continued. "It's ok though, I'm pretty sure we are both confused and quite honestly, Justin is a good choice."
The silence is absolutely suffocating. It feels like all of my senses have been heightened. The music is loud again, playing along with my heartbeat. The lights along the deck railings are much brighter than before. I can smell the smoke from someone's cigarette and the taste of the alcohol is too strong.
"Can you do me one favor?" Jayden's voice brings me back to reality.
"Sure." My voice is weak.
"Explain the feelings."
My eyebrows scrunch together, "What?"
"Explain how you feel. About him, me, everything."
I look at her, hoping I misheard but all she does is nod, gesturing for me to tell her.
"Well, I thought I really liked you. Maybe even loved you." I pause and take a deep breath. "But the more I've hung out with Justin, the more the feelings for you and him seem to mix."
It's, my turn to look up at the stars, trying to hold in the tears forming. The stress and nervousness seem to mix with the alcohol, making me feel nauseous.
"What I thought was romantic love, was actually platonic and vice versa. I began to wonder if I ever loved you at all, which seems very harsh, by the way. I thought that maybe the feeling of having someone confused me into thinking I was in love."
"I'm so sorry." She also has tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry you ever had to feel that way."
"No, I should be apologizing for continuing this relationship instead of figuring my self out. Instead of leading you on."
"Oh but Oli, you didn't."
"I totally did. And then, all of a sudden I'm telling you that you were a good experience but I really like a guy. Not to mention, I never confronted my feelings, meanwhile I was lying to myself and you." The tears start to fall down my face, all of the stress, sadness, anger and nervousness finally breaking through.
"I'm so sorry."
She pulls me into a hug. "It's not your fault."
That's all it took for the tears to turn into sobs. I cry on her shoulder and when it's finally over, I notice how she had been crying too.
"Listen, it is no one's fault that we love the way we do. Both of us will get past this, I promise." She smiles at me and then continues to speak, "We are no longer dating, but we are still friends. As your friend, I will be there when needed and I support you. You do the same for me, ok?"
I nod.
"You know, I knew you liked him for a while." She sighs. "You look at him with stars in your eyes and you talk about him as if he created life itself. You were getting avoidant but I gave you the benefit of the doubt. And I was right, you were just trying to figure things out."
She looks at me one last time, "You'll figure yourself out soon enough. I'm gonna go inside, you should go find your boy. Bye, Oli." She stands and goes inside, wiping her tears and putting on a smile again.
I try to compose myself before heading inside, wandering around, looking for anyone I recognize. Suddenly the party has become a place of unfamiliar faces. It takes me a good 20 minutes before I run into Sebastian.
"Hey, Seb? Have you seen Justin?"
Sebastian turns to me and worry immediately takes over his features. "Outside. Are you ok? You're a mess."
"Me and Jayden broke up."
"Oh no. I'm so sorry." He gives me a hug too.
"Don't be, with both know it was for the best. Where is he outside?"
Seb tilts his head. "Why are you so adamant on finding him? Just give yourself a break for a second."
"It doesn't matter, can you just tell me where he is?"
It takes him a moment to respond. Letting out a sigh, he answers. "Out front, he needed a break from so many people. I think Ryan went with him."
"Ok, thank you." Leaving Sebastian, I make my way through the crowd of people and out the front door.
I see Justin and Ryan standing out on the street corner, next to the stop sign. I make my way down the steps of the house and out onto the street. Walking quicker than normal. Once I get to them, Ryan looks at me while Justin is laughing at something he must have said.
"Justin?" I watch as he stands fully, looking at me.
"Yeah?"
"Can I talk to you?" Him and Ryan trade looks before Ryan walks back toward the house.
"Are you ok?" Justin looks me up and down, taking in my messy appearance.
"No, I need to tell you something."
"Ok... go ahead."
"Jayden broke up with me." I raise my hand to interrupt him before he apologizes. "She did it because she saw something I didn't. I like you. A lot. I needed to tell you before I psyched myself out or I did something stupid."
A smile broke out on his face and he stands super close to me. "You like me?"
"Yes."
He lets out a content sigh, one that I can feel on my lips. "I like you too."
