KAIA WASN'T SURE just how she had managed to fall asleep after that interaction, but she chalked it up to the emotional exhaustion that had accumulated over the past few days. Her nerves had been stretched to their limits, and her mind was a tumultuous sea of thoughts and fears that left her drained. The facility, with its oppressive atmosphere and constant sense of surveillance, had not been conducive to rest. Every creak, every distant footstep, had set her on edge, making it nearly impossible to drift into a peaceful slumber.

For the past week and a half, Kaia had been surviving on mere fragments of sleep, her body finely attuned to the slightest disturbances. It was as if her senses had become hyper-aware, programmed to react to any potential threat, no matter how insignificant. She had conditioned herself to wake up at the faintest noise, a defense mechanism that had become both her shield and her curse. As a result, she had managed to snatch only about eight hours of rest in total, scattered across nights filled with anxious vigilance.
