The alarm clock on my bedside table rang at 3:00 a.m. With sleepy eyes, I lazily switched the alarm off and turned on the light. I got up from the bed. I am Nicholas Andrew, age 28. My life is just what I want it be- a nice house, nice job, nice people, everything is just perfect. I looked down the window from my apartment at 15th floor in New Jersey. The view, like every morning, was hypnotizing. The city was mostly fast asleep. The towers in the distance looked beautiful with the little star-like lights shining from different places.
I stared out of the window for almost 10 minutes. Something didn't seem right. The streets had more people than usual. At 3 o' clock in the morning, not many people decide to go to office. The people, then, however, did look alive. I don't think I could have guessed that today was going to be the beginning of a totally new life for me.
I freshened up and got ready for my work by 5 o'clock. As I looked for my car keys, I realized my phone hadn't rung since then. My secretary usually did give me an are-you-ready-sir call at about 4:30 a.m. 'Weird' I thought.
I picked up my phone. The call had come. But my phone was on silent. I suddenly remembered that I had turned it silent last night.I finally found my car keys and left for office. By now, the silence of the night had broken and the city had lazily started waking up. Quite a few houses had their lights on, the occupants getting ready for their daily routine. I remembered that I had a meeting today. I had set a reminder, but obviously the phone never rung.
I reached office and went straight to my cabin. I started working for my meeting. My secretary came about half an hour later, and instantly asked me, 'Are you ready for the meeting, sir?'
I nodded my head. 'Almost done.' I finished working and closed my laptop. My secretary looked at me and said, 'Sir, the meeting will starts at sharp 12 noon.'
'Do I have any other appointments today?'
'Yes sir. You have to meet Mr. Shazin at 2 o' clock.'
'Oh yes. Almost forgot that.'
'That's why I'm your secretary, sir.' She said and smiled. I smiled back. 'Anyways, I must go now, sir.' 'OK.'
She left the cabin. I worked in my cabin till 11:30, then left. It was almost time for the meeting to start. I like to do things in advanced, so I reached the meeting hall half an hour early. The meeting started, as I knew, at 12 noon.
Once the meeting was over, I went back to my cabin. At 2 o' clock, I left to meet Mr. Shazin. My routine was almost the same everyday- work, meetings, appointment, and back home.
But today was totally different. As I walked down a corridor, I realized that the once full corridor was now empty. As I walked down the corridor, I realized the office was totally silent. 'What the hell is going on?' I thought. 'Hello? Is anyone here?' The question felt weird, but there were weirder things happening right now. My office was just empty in the middle of the day. That was not possible. My office would be the last place to be empty on a working day.
'Sally?' I called out to my secretary. No reply. 'Anyone here? Yoo-hoo!' The only person who was talking was me. 'Is this some kind of a joke?' I thought.
The office lay completely silent, with the exception of the sound of my shoes as I walked down the now empty corridor. I could feel there was danger somewhere. I looked around for something to use as a weapon, or at least to protect myself from anything dangerous.
The whole office is empty, I realized. I went to the cafeteria and picked up a knife lying on one of the tables. How can so many people disappear like that? I was just about to leave the office when someone- or something- grabbed my shoulder and pulled me around. I had learnt martial arts and immediately readied my knife to attack if necessary.
The thing that lay in front of me almost sent me into a state of panic. All the martial arts that I had learnt flew right out of my brain. I stared at the thing in front of me in disbelief.
It was a scary sight. The man, or whatever on earth it was, had his face smeared with blood. His chest almost lay open right in front of me, and I was able to see all kinds of things inside him. His lungs almost seemed to have been cut apart. But there was no time for medical examination of this thing. I immediately cut of the thing's throat, and ran out of my office.
The scene outside the office was terrifying. It appeared as if a war was taking place in front of my eyes. Weird creatures seemed to be attacking pedestrians and other people who were going about their daily routine. The creatures were... inhumane. They had shape and looks of somewhat humans, but weren't humans.
I ran to my car. I opened the door and sat inside instantly. I drove off disgusted by the sight. Weird crunching noises kept coming from under my car as I drove through the city- or what was left of it. As I saw what was going on in the city, only one thing ran through my mind- the zombie apocalypse had begun.
