"You think you're different to me, don't you?" I tilt my head, staring at each other's lips.
Without breaking eye contact, he slowly stands, making him in control with the advantage in height. I'm the one looking up at him now.
"And you...

I look down at everything I've written down in my agenda. If I'm striving for something as important as my spot as valedictorian, I had to stay organized. Keeping lists usually always helped me stay in order so I was going to follow through it one by one.
And first thing on the list is to work on getting valedictorian. Which I've basically been preparing myself for since freshman year. I joined every sport became captain of three sports, joined clubs, created a new club, became president of debate club, took AP classes, got straight A's, was in student council, and did some volunteer hours. There's no way I wasn't number one on that top three list.
For as long as I knew Carter was my only competition, he was a huge nerd. So nerdy that I know for a fact he's still a virgin, he rarely has a life other than school and probably chess club. He has a lot more free time on his hands so maybe he was number 1. I grew frustrated just by the thought. We've been academic rivals since day one.
I never knew Jude followed up so closely. Now that we're not on speaking terms, he was my competitor. I didn't have any idea on his academic history but from what I knew so far, tutoring definitely gives him some advantage. Maybe he was number 1.
I have to be number one if I'm not, then what's the point. Second doesn't mean anything, if anything it's even more insulting. Second place is the first to lose. That's all that means. I cannot be a loser. I won't allow that to happen. I'll do whatever it takes for that spot.
Harvard was my dream since I was fifteen. I was getting in one way or another.
I hear a car horn beep twice and jump from my chair to look out the window. Tensions have been high in this house for weeks. No one was really speaking to each other expect for Reggie and my mom. But when our grandmother told us she was visiting for a couple of weeks, I knew that would bring Reggie and I together.
My grandmother, Nonna as we called her, was the coolest woman alive. She inspired me a lot and if I've learned anything about confidence, it was definitely by watching her. She was in her late 50s but she still loved fashion and hair and even makeup. Plus, she was the only family member with an actual brain that works.
I watch as she comes out in a limo, that was how fancy and boujee she was. She lived in Paris after getting a divorce from my grandfather ten years ago, she still sent cards every birthday and with every visit, she brought presents with her.
