Running from the cops was something I became extremely accustomed to over this summer, although, being caught up in a murder-wrap was new for me. But at this point, it would take a lot to surprise me.
But I really need to quit saying that.
Pope and I stood outside the Ferry, while the other three stayed in the car. After a very heated discussion on what John B should do now that he's been framed for a murder he didn't commit; we ruled out Yucatán, and decided the Ferry would be the best option. At least he could get off the island.
On the way over, I had voiced that the Ferry would most likely be closed, given the amount of surveillance the police had on the entire island right now.
Of course, nobody wanted to believe me.
When Pope and I walked up to the information board to find that it was in fact closed, I held back from laughing in his face.
"Would you look at that?" I teased under my breath, "Ferry is closed."
The Heyward boy blew a frustrated puff of air out of his nose, obnoxiously rolling his eyes as I stood beside him, a smug look on my face.
Things had still been slightly awkward between us since our fight the previous day, and with Pope being so high, I knew he wasn't in the right mind to give me an apology. So, we stuck to our snide remarks and dirty looks as the tension brewed.
"I guess you've really taken this negativity thing seriously, huh?" Pope snarled, causing me to scoff and avert my gaze.
My eyes travelled along the board, seeing different Lost Pet signs, garage sale posters, and other community information. But my stomach dropped when I spotted the white paper with John B's face directly under the words "WANTED."
Pope grabbed it before I got the chance.
My mouth went dry as I read the bounty.
"Twenty-five thousand dollars?"
"Shit."
Swiftly, the two of us made our way back to the car, anxiety coursing through my veins now, realizing how bad this actually was getting.
"So, bad news. The Ferry's closed. And there's this."
Pope hands Kiara the flyer, and her eyes go wide before she passes it back to the other two.
"Well, John B. This is a good framer of you," JJ spoke dryly, his joke not at all helping the situation.
Pope got back into the car, sinking into the driver's seat. "So, the whole island is looking for John B right now."
Kiara's face was stricken with worry, the crease in her forehead prominent as she stressed. "That's a lot of money."
"Congratulations John B, you're now famous," JJ joked, handing his best friend the poster.
I pushed out a frustrated groan, my elbows resting on the open window of Kie's car, my head falling forward. "Where do we go from here? I mean, John B, we gotta get you out of here dude."
His eyes studied the paper in front of him, not responding.
"We gotta get to the HMS. We need small, no running lights," Kiara stressed.
"It's at the Chateau, Kie."
JJ kissed his teeth, a pitiful laugh bellowing from his chest. I lifted my head up slightly to see what he would say next.
"And I wonder if the cops got the entire place staked out. Let me think. Oh yeah, no. They definitely have that place locked down."
I blew a frustrated puff of air from my mouth, my head dropping again, hands dangling out in front of me as we all wracked our brains of what to do.
