MAHANDI DAY ---
Sheya hurried to the bathroom. Her mother had placed her dress for the Mehendi ceremony, and she quickly put it on since she had to leave for some work.
Karv had been busy since morning. He usually called Sheya as an alarm, but "Sunti vo kisi ki bhi nahi hai" (She doesn’t listen to anyone).
As she came downstairs in her suit, her eyes landed on the man working—none other than Karv himself. He was giving instructions to the chef, who nodded and took his tray back. Karv then looked at her and stood up.
"Uth gayi maharani?" (Finally awake, Your Highness?) he teased.
"Nahi, uthne wali hoon—duniya se." (No, I’m about to wake up—from this world.) Sheya shot back, but she stopped when she noticed Karv staring at her.
"Aise ghooro mat, Mr. Old Man." (Don’t stare at me like that, Mr. Old Man.)
"Don’t start the day with this attitude. You always act like a kid. Say something productive. But what’s with this ‘dying’ talk?" He said as his hand slipped into his sherwani pocket.
Sheya looked at him, then at his wallet. Inside, a photo of both of them was tucked away. A smile formed on her face, and for a moment, she was speechless.
"Yeh photo kyun rakhi hai? Yeh toh bohot buri hai." (Why do you even keep this picture? It’s so bad.) She said, embarrassed.
"Kya bura hai isme? Itni pyaari toh hai—mere saath hai, toh kuch toh special hoga." (What’s bad about it? It’s adorable—because it has me in it, it must be special.)
Sheya looked at him.
"Yeh toh randomly li thi, chhodo, tumse ladna matlab dimaag se sir maarna—" (This was taken randomly anyway. Arguing with you means hitting my head—)
"Deewar mein," (Against the wall,) Karv corrected her.
Just then, an aunty pulled Sheya aside.
"Beta, tu bhi Mehendi laga." (Dear, get your Mehendi done too.)
Sheya turned back and saw Karv laughing. She rolled her eyes.
A few girls were applying Mehendi on her hands, but her hair kept falling over her face. She asked the Mehendi artist to move it back, but she wasn’t doing it properly.
"Kisi ka naam likhna hai Mehendi mein?" (Do you want to add someone’s name to the Mehendi?) the Mehendi artist asked.
Sheya was about to answer when Karv suddenly spoke up.
"KARV MAHESHWARI."
The Mehendi artist nodded.
"Shayad tumhe koi bula raha hai waha—" (I think someone’s calling you over there—) Karv said to the Mehendi artist.
