Zhou Jianguo and Sun Longbin had long sensed something was off. Initially, Lu Feng had said it was all just to fool his old man, but with business booming like this, who could say if that was true? At this rate, he might soon become the richest man in the province.
The two of them wanted him to help with some matters, but he kept delaying them. Lately, they'd been visiting several times a day, only to be stonewalled. They could tell Lu Feng was deliberately avoiding them.
They'd quietly done some digging and grown increasingly suspicious.
Jumping off their motorbikes, Zhou Jianguo spoke first: "Feng, you promised us last time. What's the meaning of all this pushing us off again and again?"
"I've been busy. Once I get some free time, I'll help you out."
"And when exactly will that be?" Sun Longbin asked impatiently. "Don't tell me it'll be during the New Year. That's still ages away!"
"No, no. Look at you two, all worked up. Aren't we brothers?" Lu Feng furrowed his brow.
They'd heard the "brothers" excuse too many times. They were torn between wanting to lash out and fearing they'd offend Lu Feng and end up with nothing.
"I've already fulfilled what I promised you, haven't I? Your uncle's machine money—I gave it. The payment for your village's fruit—I covered that. So why are you making a fuss here?"
Zhou Jianguo felt utterly stifled. He had been boasting to his family about how he'd made it big, how his powerful friend could easily get him a position as a minor official. Now, it was all turning into a joke.
Ren Qianbo observed the situation, his eyes darting back and forth. Lu Feng quickly said, "Alright, let me finish up this busy period. I'll invite you for dinner and drinks. Don't worry. Would I ever let my brothers down?"
With no other option, the two men left, riding away on their motorbikes. Ren Qianbo, without a word, got back in his car and drove off.
"Feng, they don't trust you anymore," Big Head said.
Watching the retreating vehicles, Lu Feng muttered, "It's not about trust—they've figured out the lie. But I've grown strong enough that I don't need to rely on anyone anymore."
"Lie?" Big Head looked at Lu Feng in disbelief.
When Big Head had told his father everything Lu Feng was doing, his father had immediately seen through it, saying, "Lu Feng is lying. He doesn't have any 'old man' backing him. Don't overthink it."
But Big Head had an unshakable faith in Lu Feng. Whatever Feng said must be right.
Ren Qianbo drove to catch up with Zhou Jianguo and Sun Longbin. After a brief chat, the three of them found a small restaurant and sat down. Zhou Jianguo and Sun Longbin spilled the whole story like beans from a bamboo tube.
Ren Qianbo, being more experienced, quickly pieced together the truth. "Why don't you visit his place? Wouldn't that clear everything up? Why keep guessing?"
The three exchanged glances and decided to pay Lu Feng a visit.
When they arrived downstairs, a group of people was gossiping about how Jiang Xiaoyan had been buying clothes earlier in the day. Seeing a car and two motorbikes pull up, the crowd paused their chatter, eyes wide with curiosity.
"Does Lu Feng live here?" Ren Qianbo asked.
"Oh, looking for Lu Feng? That guy really has made a name for himself. The people coming to see him keep getting fancier."
"Right? If you call this making it big, he's well on his way."
"Yeah. So, what business are you here for?" Wu Hongyu sized up Zhou Jianguo and Sun Longbin and recognized them. "Aren't you two his buddies?"
