The early morning light was just beginning to seep through the tall windows of the Kelce-Swift household when Travis stepped into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes. His hair was tousled from a restless night, wearing a simple T-shirt and sweatpants. The coffee machine hummed in the background, brewing the first cup of the day, but there was something else on Travis's mind that morning, his one-year-old daughter, Ellie.
Ellie had been in one of those moods since sunrise. The kind of mood where no one could make her happy except for her mom. Taylor was busy, intensely focused in the studio for her new album, back-to-back meetings that had run late into the evening yesterday. Taylor had sent a quick text that morning: "I'll be wrapped up in a couple hours, I swear. Love you both so much ❤️."
But that didn't change the fact that Ellie was having none of it. She cried every time Travis picked her up, her small face scrunching in dismay. And now, as the morning wore on, she was clinging to his legs as he tried to make her breakfast, wailing every time he reached for the bowl of oatmeal.
Travis sighed, leaning down to gently pat Ellie's back and lift her up. "Hey, kiddo. I get it, I do. But Mommy's working right now." He shifted her in his arms, bouncing her gently to try to calm her down. She wasn't buying it. The sound of her small sobs filled the quiet kitchen. Travis looked at her, feeling a familiar pang in his chest.
He glanced toward the closed door that led to the soundproof studio. Taylor had a long day ahead, and he knew better than to disturb her while she was working. He wasn't about to interrupt her creative flow. He'd learned that lesson after their first year together. But Ellie was having none of it. She wanted her mom. And there was nothing Travis could do to change that.
Still, he hesitated. Should he call her in? Should he text her?
The coffee machine beeped, signaling that it was done brewing, and the aroma filled the kitchen. Travis took a deep breath after setting his daughter down, and glanced down at Ellie, whose tiny hands were reaching for his phone.
"Hey, are you trying to text Mommy, huh?" he muttered under his breath, offering her the phone. She gurgled, chewing on the edges of it like it was the greatest thing she had ever encountered.
Travis smiled, but the smile faded as he thought again about Taylor. He didn't want to disturb her. He didn't want to be that husband, always pulling her away from her work.
But then, as if on cue, his phone buzzed in his one-year-old's hands. Taylor's name flashed across the screen.
"Hey, babe. Everything okay with Ellie?"
Travis hesitated. He stared at the message for a moment, chewing on his lip. He thought about it, how he felt helpless watching Ellie cry, how it felt like a piece of his heart was breaking because he couldn't fix it.
He typed out a quick reply:
"Ellie's not having it today. She's crying a lot and only wants you. I hate bothering you, but I don't know what to do."
He sent it and waited, knowing that Taylor would likely drop everything to help, but he also didn't want to be that guy. He didn't want her to feel like she had to abandon her work just because Ellie was having a rough time.
A moment later, the phone buzzed again.
"You're never bothering me. I'm wrapping up in a bit, but I'll be out there as soon as I can. Can you try distracting her? Give her some snacks, maybe a little walk around the house? I'm right here if you need me."
Travis read the message with a relieved smile. He wasn't bothering her. Taylor wasn't the type to put her work above her family, and it made his chest tighten with gratitude every time she reminded him of that.
"Okay, kiddo," Travis whispered to Ellie, who was still tugging at his T-shirt and sniffing softly. "Mommy says I'm not bothering her. So, we'll be okay for a little while."
Ellie's big blue eyes widened as Travis stood up, cradling her against his chest. "How about a snack, huh? Maybe some of your favorite puffs?" he suggested, trying his best to sound chipper. But she wasn't having it. She let out a loud, indignant whine, and her arms reached desperately for the studio door.
Travis sighed. "You are so your mother's daughter."
He took a deep breath, trying to push past his own frustration. This was part of the gig, being a dad. And as much as it hurt to see Ellie upset, he knew he had to be strong for her. So, he did what he could. He gave her a small cup of puffs and let her sit in his lap at the kitchen table, hoping the distraction would work.
But nothing worked. Not the snacks. Not the toys. Not even the funny faces Travis tried making, or the silly dance moves he pulled out in a last-ditch effort to make her smile.
Ellie just kept reaching toward the studio door, her cries growing louder.
Travis felt his heart twist in his chest. He hated this. Hated not being able to make it better for her. And while he knew he was doing his best, it still felt like it wasn't enough.
Finally, he stood up, holding Ellie carefully against his chest again. He didn't want to do this. He didn't want to disrupt Taylor's work. But when he heard Ellie's wails become more frantic, he felt like he had no other choice.
He knocked lightly on the studio door, holding his breath.
"Tay?" he called softly.
There was a brief pause before Taylor's voice came through the door. "Yeah?"
"I—uh—Ellie's not stopping. I don't know what to do," Travis admitted, feeling a mix of guilt and helplessness. "She's just... she's only crying for you. I hate to ask, but..."
Before he could finish, the door opened, and there stood Taylor, in a loose sweatshirt and headphones around her neck, eyes tired but kind. She had been in the middle of a recording session, but when she saw her daughter in Travis's arms, her expression softened immediately.
"You never have to feel bad about asking me for help," Taylor said, reaching out to take Ellie from Travis's arms. "You're her dad, Trav. We're a team. Don't you ever forget that."
Ellie immediately quieted in her arms, her small hands clutching at Taylor's shirt. Her face buried against Taylor's shoulder, and the relief was instant. The tears slowed, the sniffles softened, and soon, there was only the sound of Ellie's soft breathing.
Taylor smiled down at her daughter, her heart swelling with love. "Hey, sweet girl," she murmured softly, kissing the top of Ellie's head. "I'm here, okay? Mommy's right here."
Travis watched the scene with a tender smile. He could feel the tension that had been building in his chest melt away as he watched his wife hold their daughter. It was such a simple thing, but to him, it felt like everything.
"You know," Taylor said, looking up at him with a playful glint in her eyes, "If you ever need me, don't hesitate to come find me. I might be busy, but you and Ellie are my top priority. Always."
Travis stepped forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I know, Tay. I just... I didn't want to interrupt. You're in the middle of something important."
Taylor smiled, her voice soft and reassuring. "I'm never too busy for my family. And Ellie, she needs me. So, I'm all yours, just like always."
Travis took a deep breath, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. "You're amazing," he whispered, his voice full of gratitude.
Taylor grinned, her eyes sparkling with warmth. "I love you, Trav. We've got this. We're in this together, always."
She messaged her team she had been working with that they were just going to have to try to finish up the next day, her family needed her. Her team understood and they rescheduled everything else that needed to be done and Taylor closed off the door to her in-home studio.
And as she sat down on the couch with Ellie, the two of them nestled together under a soft blanket, Travis couldn't help but feel like the luckiest guy in the world. He had everything he ever needed right there in front of him. A beautiful wife, a loving daughter, and a family that would always have each other's backs. Even in the chaos of parenting, love was always the glue that held them together.
