I'm breathless staring into his eyes. My wolf is ecstatic. He helps me straighten onto my feet, but I don't even realize it. Time had stopped, and nothing else mattered.

I come to my senses and look around the classroom. No one had noticed the scene that just unfolded.

"What are you doing here?" I manage to get out.

"I couldn't leave you." He answers me, still gazing into my eyes. It is very distracting.

"You already did." I answer him. "Are you even my mate anymore?" The truth is, I know he never went to the council. My wolf still howled for him every night.

"I was going to the council. I made it halfway, but then I stopped to think. I thought about how one day I'll make a mistake. One day I might hurt you. One day I would regret losing you as a mate. I would see you with someone like Max, or Cameron, or Chance, and my heart would break. Plus there's like fifty new wolves here. I'm not going to let some hormonal teenage wolf near you." He's serious.

"Fifty?" I ask, obviously surprised.

"Yes. I scanned the area before you got here. They're mostly young male pups, exactly the kind of people you will not be around." I smirk as I see the jealousy peer through his serious demeanor.

"Are you smirking at me" He looks at me amused.

"Well, it's not often that an alpha pours his heart out to me in a classroom full of students.

"Please. These idiots are lucky to see senior year before 2020." He smiles at me.

Seeing Maximus almost makes me forget that he left. As I forget everything around me from being overwhelmed by his presence, a familiar deep voice brings me out of my trance.

"Okay class. We'll begin just as soon as Ms. Hastings and her friend take a seat." He shoots daggers towards Maximus and I.

"On second thought, it's the first day. None of you probably brought your supplies anyway. Let's get to know each other." He smirks.

A dark-haired kid with heavy eye make-up speaks first. "Um, hi. My name is Kenneth. I'm from Chicago. " He starts walking back to his seat.

"Thank you, Kenneth." Mr. Mason speaks.

Several more students, including me, introduce themselves before Mason looks towards Maximus.

"Last one." He smirks.

Maximus breathes a ragged sigh before rising from his seat. As soon as he makes movement several girls began to giggle and curl their hair.

"Slut." I whisper, glaring at everyone while my wolf is growling on the inside.

"Hannah. One more and that's detention." Mason stares at me like he is looking into my soul with his stone eyes. "And I know we don't want that." He whispers to where I'm sure only Maximus and I can hear him. I know he did, because Maximus growls angrily at Mason.

The girls on the front row smile their 'seductive' smiles to Maximus, groaning when he doesn't even look their way.

"I see we've saved the best for last." Mason says.

"My name is Maximus. I'm from around here in the part of town most of you probably don't travel to very often." He speaks swift and hard.

"Elaborate." Mason speaks, pushing Maximus's temper.

"My family originated from the part of town that has stories. Dark stories." Maximus speaks darkly, aiming his words at Mason.

"Ooh, a bad boy." A blonde haired girl says from the other side of the room, making my blood boil. Her comments attract giggles from the rest of the girls.

"Alright ladies, that's enough." Mason speaks, never taking his eyes off Maximus. "Have a seat, Maximus." Venom laces his tone.

Maximus is seated next to me on my left. Courtney is on my right while Gabriel is behind her.

The class drags on for the last forty-five minutes. Mason makes snide remarks towards Maximus and I throughout the period, but Maximus's presence calms my anger. No matter how mad I get at Mason, Maximus coming back is the only thing I can think about.

I watch the clock as we have ten minutes of class left. I feel a strange tingling in the back of my mind that I instantly recognize as Maximus trying to mind-link me. I had given up trying to link with him three days after he left. He technically isn't in my pack, but he is my mate, which makes it even stronger.

"I know what you did." He speaks in my mind.

"What are you talking about?" I mentally respond back.

"You stopped eating. When I caught you I noticed you lost about ten pounds. Don't think we wont talk about this in private." He passes a quick glance at me before pretending to be listening to Mason's conversation.

"I'm sorry." I tell him through the link.

"I know you are. I am too" He looks at me silently. I catch his eyes and for the first time I notice the worry in them. I see the fear he must've encountered before coming back. I see the regret. I see his confusion. The one emotion I see overriding them all, is his joy. I see how happy he is to be near me again, and I'm sure my eyes mirror his.

"I miss you." Maximus speaks, still holding my eyes.

"I miss you too." I tell him.

"Maximus. Hannah. Anything you want to share with the class?" Mr. Mason breaks our gazes, staring our way.

"No." Maximus says coldly.

"No what?" Mason asks, obviously feeling victorious about the sense of power he has over us in his classroom.

"No, sir." Maximus speaks lowly, but roughly.

"Thank you." Mason says before the bell rings, dismissing us for first period.

I rise from my seat, ready to walk out with Courtney, Chance, and Gabriel. Maximus grabs my arm, stopping me.

"Who's your next class?" He asks.

"Literature with Ms. Farris." I tell him.

"I'm going to Algebra." He says before sighing.

"I'll see you again fourth period in P.E." I say, watching his face light up.

"I'll see you there." He smiles.

I begain walking to English when I heard my name.

"Hannah." Maximus speaks.

"I'm taking you to lunch." He says confidently before he smirks and walks away.

I smile to myself as I turn to walk to Literature. "What a school year this will be."
