Bennet had made it back to the house in one piece and was now locked away in his chambers under Lady Harrison's strict instructions. His eyes were bloodshot , his hands red raw. He was broken. Lady Harrison had to keep him safe again. More than ever. She paced around the ball room frantically looking at the Grand clock. Each chime made her jump as she waited for the doctor to arrive.
Bennet clawed against the window crying out as he watched the rain fall down the glass. Each raindrop that fell he saw her face. Smeared with her own blood lying dead on the ground. The howling wind sounded like her screams as it snaked around him. He unlocked the window and opened it fully. Sitting on the window ledge letting the rain fall on him. Drenching him. Some would say he was trying to cleanse himself but he was too broken for that now. The Ravens had got him where they wanted him.
He looked down to the town below and watched as the street lights flickered with the wind. Each house slowly turning their lights off sending the courtyard into darkness. It was truly magnificent to sit and watch as the town went to bed.
The clock struck in the ball room signalling quarter to and made Lady Harrison jump out of her skin as she heard a loud knock at the door. He was right on time. She hurriedly opened the door to reveal a very disheveled Doctor Thomas. His hair stuck to his forehead due to the rain.
" do come in. He is in his chambers. Hurry." Lady Harrison said hurriedly but still politely shutting the front door.
They both headed upstairs with an air of urgency in their step. Through the long corridors to the west side of the house. Past the library , the parlour room , the bathroom and Lady Harrison's study. To the large door at the end of the corridor with a hand carved sign that said Bennet on it. She ran her hand gently over it and the knocked on the door.
" Bennet open up. It's Lady Harrison and Doctor Thomas." Lady Harrison said sweetly through the door.
There was no answer. So Lady Harrison tried again. Again there was no reply from Bennet. She tried one last time and still no reply. Which made her worry. She checked the time on Doctor Thomas' pocket watch and saw it wasn't bed time so he wouldn't be in the sleeping quarters. She tried the door knob but it was locked. Now she began to panic. She smiled sweetly at Doctor Thomas and then rushed down the corridor to her husband's study where the master key to all the rooms in the house was kept. She grabbed it and ran back to Bennet's chambers. Where Doctor Thomas was still stood calmly outside of. She tried to jam the key into the lock but her hands were too shaky. Doctor Thomas took it from her and opened the door. Lady Harrison nearly knocked the door off its hinges as she barged into the room screaming Bennet's name. There was still no answer.
Until she walked to the window in his sleeping chamber and saw that it was wide open. The curtain flapping in the wind. The clock stroke twelve just as a flash of lightning and a roll of thunder shook the town.
Tick tick goes the clock. Remember what they told you. Fight today the honourable way. Never be alone. Tick tock goes the clock. Remember war is coming. The Ravens are ready to dominate. You can scream and cry after. Tick tock goes the clock each time it strikes. Your heart will race and nothing will be the safe after.
