nalani and oscar were sat on the couch, sharing the cream soda they had recently found. they hear the backdoor of the chateau open, making them both furrow their eyebrows in sync.
"hello?" nalani calls out, standing up and walking over to the front door to see if the pogues were still outside. "they're gone, the fires out, too."
nalani turned around, spotting barry standing in the doorway. he had a gun in his hand, pointing it at them once again. she raised her hands up, dropping the can onto the floor. it spilled onto the rotting wood, soaking into it.
"where are your friends?" he asked, his voice firm and scary.
oscar turned to face nalani for a moment, trying to console her with no words. "we don't know. they went out hours ago and it's only us." he lied.
"i swear, barry." nalani's voice shook as she heard rafe's calls from outside, his footsteps getting closer and closer to the chateau. "please, nobody else is here."
the front door swings open and rafe enters the room, his eyes immediately falling on his little sister. a part of him wanted to hug her and tell her that he was sorry for everything that he had done, but another part of him wanted to get to john b.
"where are they, nalani?" he asked, signalling for barry to lower his gun.
nalani? he never called her that.
"not here." she spat, her eyes getting angrier. "i just told him," she pointed at barry, "they went out ages ago and we've been here alone."
"fuck." rafe ran a hand through his hair, pacing back and forth. he walked back out into the front yard, yelling something to barry. he shot a bullet straight up into the air, making nalani and oscar cover their ears.
a couple seconds later, barry and rafe quickly ran off, finding nothing. oscar quickly ran outside to check if the others were okay but nalani just stood in place.
as much as she knew deep down that rafe wasn't rafe anymore, it still hurt whenever he proved he wasn't. whenever his angry eyes met her, it hit her again like the aftershock of an earthquake.
she felt helpless and also responsible at the same time, it was something she couldn't juggle.

"look, if rafe and barry know, it's just a matter of time before everyone knows." nalani sat down on a makeshift bench, next to sarah.
"i told you." jj threw his arms up in the air as he paced back and forth. "we should've just gone south, man."
"nobody cares about going to yucatan, jj!" oscar exclaimed.
"why does no one ever listen!"
"i get it, i get it." john b interrupted, "i understand."
"i have an idea." sarah interrupted, making them all turn to look at her. "with me back, my dad's going to have to choose between me and rafe. no offence, nala."
"none taken." she murmured back in response.
"he's gonna choose me." sarah reassured.
nalani glanced down at the ground, cracking her knuckles as quietly as she could. ward would choose sarah, which is helpful but it also made her feel horrible at the same time. he would never pick her, ever. she was pretty sure he hated her and she didn't even know why.
it felt bad to be sat about it, too. other people had it worse than her, people who were sitting right across from her. she had a bed, clothes and a warm house, so she just felt selfish.
