A piercing scream startled the nurse on duty as she jolted awake. Mi-hee’s mother stood frozen near the bathroom door, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the empty bed where her daughter had been lying just hours before. Her heart raced, her breath coming in short gasps as panic consumed her.
“She’s gone!” she cried out, her voice trembling. “Where is she? Where’s my daughter?”
She stumbled to the door, flinging it open and shouting for help. Nurses and hospital staff rushed in, their faces a mix of confusion and urgency.
“Calm down, ma’am,” one nurse tried to soothe her, placing a hand gently on her arm.
“Calm down?” Mi-hee’s mother snapped, her voice shaking with fury. “My daughter is in a coma, and she’s missing! How could you let this happen? I trusted this hospital, and you’ve failed me!”
The nurse flinched under her sharp tone but tried again. “Please, let us check the security footage. She couldn’t have gone far.”
“Check it now!” she yelled, her hands trembling as she dialed Min-jun’s number. The moment he answered, she broke down. “Min-jun, Mi-hee’s gone! She’s missing! Get here right now!”
Min-jun’s alarmed voice on the other end only added to the chaos. “What do you mean she’s missing? I’m on my way!”
The commotion woke Kang-ha and Jae-i, who had been dozing off in their chairs in the corner of the room. Both of them shot up, their eyes darting to the empty bed.
“What’s going on?” Kang-ha asked, rubbing his eyes and blinking in disbelief.
“Mi-hee’s gone!” her mother cried, tears streaming down her face. “They lost her! They don’t even know where she is!”
Kang-ha and Jae-i exchanged a startled glance before quickly grabbing their jackets.
“We’ll find her,” Kang-ha said firmly, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him.
Jae-i nodded, her mind racing. “She couldn’t have gone far. She’s—she’s still weak, isn’t she?”
The three of them joined the frantic search, combing through the hospital floor by floor. Kang-ha checked the stairwells, his heart pounding as he called out Mi-hee’s name, his voice echoing in the empty halls.
Jae-i searched the cafeteria and waiting areas, her hands clutching the edge of a table as she whispered to herself, “Please, Mi-hee, be okay.”
Meanwhile, Mi-hee’s mother stormed into the security office, demanding to see the footage. “If anything happens to my daughter,” she threatened, her voice low and icy, “I’ll sue this entire hospital into oblivion.”
The search dragged on, every passing second feeling like an eternity. The hospital staff joined in, their flashlights cutting through the dimly lit corridors. Yet, with every door opened and every corner checked, the tension only grew, a suffocating weight pressing down on everyone involved.
“Where are you, Mi-hee?” Kang-ha muttered under his breath, his fists clenched as he pushed open yet another door, only to find an empty room.
