Rapunzel
Bells. Her voice was like listening to bells. And not just any ordinary bells, either. I could picture it whenever she belted out the latest Broadway musical number, a glistening pair of gargantuan metal antiquities that sparkled silver as soon as they were struck by golden sunlight. Nothing could equate to hearing her, as she was the goddess of music itself. I was surprised she didn't choose that path in the first place, as I was positive I would've heard her on my favorite radio station by now.
"Ariel?" I piped out, cringing a bit when I realized my words had penetrated harmfully into the fabric of her singing.
She didn't mind, of course, and relaxed her fingers from the piano keys, her rose lips stretching pleasantly into the best of smiles as soon as her eyes fell on my figure. "Punzie!" she exclaimed, extending her arms like the wings of a bird.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey!" I shrieked, scurrying toward her and returning her embrace. She had made the motions to rise to her feet. After a quick yet gentle squeeze, I stepped back a bit, giving her a reprimanding stare. "Ariel, I'm not letting you stand at all."
"Aw, come on," she replied, flashing a poorly-formed pout that quickly morphed into a grin. "Punzie, I'm gonna have to walk, anyway."
I folded my arms, smacking my foot against the tiled floor. "Not while I'm here!"
Giggling, she pushed herself up, despite my protests. "It's okay, honey. Walking is fine. Healthy, even."
Uncertainty flooded my mind as my eyes followed her every movement. Then again, I was very naive about these kinds of things. It couldn't suppress my distress at all, though. Vivid worst-case scenarios pooled together, each one playing out with details and emotions etched out into the storyline with expertise. What would I do if Ariel was to slip on a careless student's pudding wrapper? Ariel allowed us to munch on whatever we pleased during the period. Now that I pondered this situation and its possible worrisome outcomes, I contemplated telling her to make that her one and only rule.
But so many other things could go wrong, as well. What would I tell her to do if she tripped over a stair? Chisel it out with an axe?
"Hey, Punzie!" My mouth clamped shut, as I had been gaping for a while at one particular corner of the room. Ariel was gazing at me, her eyebrows furrowed in amusement. "You know what? I'm not even gonna ask what crap was getting made in your head."
A sheepish smile tugged at my lips. "Heh, heh."
She lifted a finger, her free hand resting against the gleaming propped lid of the piano. "But, I am gonna ask you one thing."
"Huh?"
"When is Elsa coming?"
"Um...." I glanced briefly at the lifeless phone in my hand, watching the screen burst into a sudden flash of glowing color as I checked for messages. None. "Huh," I muttered. My eyes met Ariel's once more, a shrug lifting my shoulders. "She told me she'd come as soon as the final bell rang."
It was quiet for a moment. In this sharp silence, both Ariel and I watched each other, our expressions blank.
Thud, thud, thud, thud!
"You're hearing that, right?" she asked me, to which I slowly tipped my chin in affirmation.
Thud, thud, thud, thud!
