You were a human. Your love was an alien. Recently things were happening on his planet that no one would tell you about, but every time you saw him lately he had some kind of new scar. When you asked about them, he would shrug or shake his head, and tell you not to worry, it would be over soon.

"Alit, how am I supposed to trust you if you won't tell me what's wrong?" You asked him one night. "I mean, is this life threatening? I haven't seen your friend Mizeal in a while, what happened to him?"

"Why are you getting on my case?" The tired-sounding Barian asked, this time with a bloodstained bandage over his right eye. "I keep telling you, everything is going to be alright."

"Alit that's the thing about us humans, we need more than that, or maybe it's just me but I can't keep doing this if I don't know if you're going to come back to me."

"Then you can't keep doing this." Alit stood to look down at you, his expression kind of hopeless. "I thought it was best not to tell to protect you, but if you can't trust me then fine. I won't keep protecting you." He brushed the bangs away from your face. "The Barians and Astrals are fighting a war against an alien force from across the galaxy. This isn't your science fiction, this is real. Truth is I could die any day. These guys want to take over the Earth, but while I'm still alive I will not let that happen." The Barian boy tilted your head to look into his eyes. "You see why I needed to protect you now?"

"Honestly no, I could have helped, you're fighting for my world here, I-i just--" Your lover bent down and enveloped you in his arms.

"I just don't want to see you hurt," Alit confessed, stroking your hair.

"You think I'm any different?" A tear dripped down your cheek. "Please, if I can't fight, at least let me clean be a nurse on the battlefield, I don't like seeing people injured for such a terrible reason."

"Wow, I think that's a contradiction in terms."

"I really want to..."

All was silent for a moment. "If you really want to help... alright. But you need to stay in the medical tent no matter what happens, and if the enemy invades the tent, run like heck and wait for me to come retrieve you. Can you do that?"

You nodded, the most certain you had ever been, despite the risk of your own life. It was worth it for him...

***

You weren't sure how many days you were confined to this tent. Time worked differently in the Barian world; on Earth it could have been two days or two months.

You wondered sometimes about your family, the only goodbye you had left them was a note that said "I'm doing this for you." The same words Alit told you.

Work was slow here, which you guessed was a good thing. It took a while to adapt to the rhythm of life here, treating injuries, sleeping in shifts. One of the others assisting in the medical tent, Durbe, was a good teacher.

After the first week (you assumed) you caught your first glimpse of the enemy. They were humanoid with long, glistening blades for hands and unearthly metal armor. The only way to kill them was to hit them with a shock of energy big enough to stun them, then hit them in between the head and chest metal pieces. Compared to the interstellar warriors, you felt like a lumbering idiot.

Then the day came. Early in the morning someone sounded an alarm. The metal warriors invaded the camp, tearing through cloth tents, headed for the largest- the medicine tent. You heard they were struggling, and when you looked out, Alit and a couple of other warriors were ruthlessly fending them off, desperate to protect the heart of the base. Durbe grabbed a spear and shouted at all the other nurses to get behind him. You were scared, but you tried to think positively. "Everything will be okay," you whispered to the others. They respected you, so you knew you could make them relax.

You remembered what Alit told you. You were supposed to run, but you wanted to stay back and protect the friends you made.

The first warriors broke in, tipping over the shelves as they stampeded toward you. Durbe shot them down, but more kept coming. You were soon surrounded by five, six Barian soldiers bent on protecting their healers. One of these was your lover, and you knew he didn't care about any of the others.

The rest of what happened was a blur of red. You were the only one with red blood, Astral beings bled gold and Barian blood was darker, more of a purple. One of the monsters ripped through your belly, and you heard someone shout as if their heart had been the thing broken. You realized the red was Alit's skin, he ripped the rest of the enemy warriors to shreds, and then raced to your side. You could no longer see straight.

"Y/n, I told you to run... You decided to be a hero and it cost you... It cost me you..." The Barian boy sobbed in recognition that your wounds were too deep to heal.

"Don't worry, Alit," You breathed. "I'll be back..." You were wrong earlier. That was the most certain statement of your life, as well as the last.
