Paige and I walk to our usual lunch table, where Cara is already sitting. This girl gets around, I think to myself. "Hey Cara!" Paige and I say at the same time. We sit down, and I notice that today, the group of sophomore girls is joined by the brunette's boyfriend. Jake Franklin is his name, so I've heard. Sure, I've seen him around, but aside from his body and hair, I'm not really aware of what makes him idol material. When I say idol, I mean that those girls worship him.
"Why do we even pay for this crap?" he utters with disgust, and pushes his styrofoam lunch tray across the table. His plastic girlfriend nods reverently and flings aside the cardboard pizza she was previously nibbling. I roll my eyes at their ridiculousness, and shake my head at Paige's attentiveness. I open my book and begin to read, when Jake lifts his stick thin girl toy out of his lap and saunters over to our side of the table. "Aren't you a pretty thing," he strokes Cara's perfect face with one finger, and slides his other hand down her back. I stand defensively, ready to scream at the jerk, when Cara slaps Jake so hard that he flies backward a few feet.
"How dare you touch me," Cara breathes in a voice that sounds almost evil. "I am no 'thing', and I deserve not to be treated as such." The eyes of most of the people in the cafeteria are on her. Smirking, she links arms with Paige and me, and we glide out of the room, together.***
"Cara. What you did back there. I swear he flew back when you hit him like you were in a video game or something! How... Wha...."
Cara laughs lightly at me, totally a different person despite mere hours since the slap. "I'll tell you how I did it as soon as you agree to go to the woods with me after school tomorrow."
"The woods? We live in Texas. Where are we gonna find woods?"
"Exactly."
"So you're just never gonna tell me how you did it?"
"As soon as you say you'll go."
I'm confused albeit intrigued, so I nod in agreement to whatever wacko plan she's got. I know she's new and I shouldn't know if I can trust her yet, but her lunchroom feat forced me to respect and fear her. And secretly, I want to see these alleged woods.Opinions on Cara? Personally, I wish I had her strength. What do you think she has planned for Lissy after school tomorrow? And what is she talking about with these 'woods'?
