Chapter 5 - Adopted!

A sharp knock came at the door.

The warden took a deep breath and called "Come in!"

The Johnsons walked in, with smiles on their faces and took a seat in the chairs the warden indicated.

"Thank you for seeing us," Celeste Johnson said. "We appreciate it very much."

"Well yes," the warden said. "I try to speak to all the visitors when they come to visit".

Jessica was stalling. Why on earth were they making small talk? She looked the Johnsons in the eyes. She knew they are aware that some of the other potential parents requested permission to adopt Evvie and she was a hundred percent sure they knew she had rejected every offer. They were pretty much cocky in attitude, thought Jessica. Why Mr. Johnson could hardly contain the smirk on his face! Mrs. Johnson's eyes were gleaming with excitement. Clearly they both thought they had won the chance to adopt Evvie. If Jessica is to keep her life they better had! But how can she allow Evvie to leave with these innocent people? Was she ready to die? To put the lives of every adult and child of Windy Willows at risk? She didn't know what to do!

Jessica took a deep breath. "Mr and Mrs. Johnson. Please don't get me wrong. Are you sure that Evvie is the child you wish to adopt? We have smaller children, babies here. Wouldn't one of them be more suitable to your life?"

"Why Warden, one would think you do not wish Evvie to leave?" Mr. Johnson looked the warden straight in the eyes.

"Well Evvie has become quite a fixture at Windy Willows, Mr. Johnson. The staff are very attached to her and she to them." Jessica lied. Her heart raced wildly. She knew she was signing her own death warrant.

A brief knock came at the door. Before she can call out, the door opened and in walked Evvie herself.

"Oh! I'm sorry Warden. I didn't know you still had visitors! I'll leave!" She said attempting to close the door. She had a look of horror on her face.

"Oh please no!" Celeste called out. "Do come in Evvie. We would like to speak to you!" She smiled gently at the child.

With a sweet smile upon her face Evvie came back into the room.

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt!"

"What did you want darling?" Asked Mr. Johnson

"I wanted...to ask...if...uh...the Warden...whether anyone...um...wanted me?" Evvie eyes were filled with tears and her she blushed furiously.

Jessica glared at Evvie. Why that little demon! There was a extra glint in Evvie's eyes and a ghost of a smirk around her lips only Jessica could see. She planned it this way. She knew Jessica wanted to stop the adoption and she ensured by interrupting the meeting that Jessica had no choice in the matter!

Jessica schooled her face into one of calm. She didn't want the Johnsons to see her anger at being thwarted.

Mrs. Johnson gushed. "Oh you sweetheart! Oh course we do! Would you like to be our daughter?"

Evvie smiled so brightly, eyes all lit up, tears pouring down her cheeks.

"Yes yes oh yes!" She squealed.

She threw her arms around Celeste and Jarrod Johnson hugged them both.
Evvie was facing the warden. The evil smile she gave the warden had Jessica heart sinking. She had failed.

Celeste turned around and smiled brightly at the warden. "You see? There wasn't anything to worry about! She wants to be adopted by us!"

Jessica smiled. "Congratulations to you all. I...I hope that you all will be happy and safe."

Safe? What a strange thing to say! Thought Mr. Johnson as he escorted Evvie and his wife out to the car an hour later. He helped them get in and got in the driver's seat and turned around to smile at Evvie.

"Welcome to your new life Evvie!"

She smiled sweetly.

"Thank you so much. Mummy and Daddy!" She lowered her eyes and blushed prettily.

Celeste and Jarrod had tears in their eyes. Their dream had come through. He took his wife's hand in his and squeezed it tightly as they turned around and drove off.

Evvie knelt and looked out the back windscreen. She looked up and saw Jessica looking out her window at the car. She saw Evvie looking at her and glared angrily. Evvie smirked and projected her thoughts into Jessica's mind.

"Awwww chin up Jess. You'll see me again one day! Don't miss me too much! Hahahahahahahahaha!"

Jessica whispered, knowing Evvie will hear her. "No matter how long it takes, I will destroy you."

"You can try", came the soft reply as the car turned left at the gates and drove away.
