As she descended the stairs, she can hear the murmur of voices coming from the formal parlour. Jessica MacGregor took a deep breath and pause to look into the mirror-like stained glass window which cast colours of red, blue and green from the sun reflecting onto it. She stared at her reflection, noting her dark deep set black eyes, straight nose and neat black hair which shined with a blue black gloss. She glanced at her lips and made a face for she had a deep down wish that her lips were a little bit fuller. Shaking her head at her folly she quickly descended the stairs and swept into the room, head held high and face devoid of expression. Little would anyone know, her heart was racing and her hands shaking ever so slightly, from the look of utter peace upon her plain face.
The occupants of the room fell silent as she came in and all eyes swept over her, some devoid of expression, some eager and even a few with looks of disdain and dismissal. She quirked her lips slightly and held her head even higher. Let them look down on her if they want! So what if she favored dark clothing? Ha! They would soon be groveling at her feet! For she had what they most desired.
"Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Windy Willows. " She looked each person in the eye one by one Til their eyes fell. They can sense her displeasure. She smiled even more.
She made her way to the front of the room near the fireplace and allowed her eyes to meet each person, one by one until their eyes fell away from her steady gaze. Satisfied that she had their complete attention, Jessica smirked and started speaking.
"Now ladies and gentlemen. I know you are all eager to begin. Some of you have waited a very long time for this day." Several couples smiled and looked at each other with hopeful expressions.
"However..." Her voice grew harder "I will not tolerate any of you making false promises and raising the hopes of these innocent children. The rules are in place for a reason. If you see the child you wish to adopt you will advise me and none other. When and only when the documents are completed will the child be informed. If there are several of you interested in one child then the ultimate decision will be mines and mines only."
A gentleman near the front row blustered. "Your decision!? That's preposterous! What if we can provide a better home for the child!?"
Jessica held his gaze til he flushed. "As I said...the decision will be mines to make. I know what is best for these children. Nevertheless everything will be taken into consideration."
She looked around at the others and said, "Now if everyone will make their way out to the gardens, the children are playing there."
Excitedly the visitors quickly filed out of the room, talking in hushed but excited tones. Jessica quietly followed them to the garden doors where they paused as she made her way inbetween them and opened the doors to the outside rear gardens where the children were playing.
"Children! Children! The visitors are here!"
Squeals of excitement rose as all the children looked over and ran to line up eagerly. Adoption day! Oh my!
Jessica looked at the visitors and motioned for them to enter the garden. They eagerly filed out and made their way over to the happy children. Suddenly she heard a gasps came from the parents. For casually walking over was Evvie. She looked like an angel, blond curls flowing around her shoulders, blue eyes widened and innocent looking. Jessica heart stopped for she can see that Evvie had completely captured the attention of the potential parents and that they were in awe of her.
One lady approached Evvie. She was young, about her mid-twenties with light blond hair cut in a pageboy style, immaculately dressed in a midnight blue suit with a cream flower at her shoulder. She gently caressed Evvie's cheek and said, "What a gorgeous child you are! Please tell me your name?" she asked softly.
With a voice like fairy music she replied,
"Evvie...my name is Evvie."
