Wei Wuxian’s mind raced as she watched the battle unfold. The fierce corpses she had raised, once brimming with resentment and raw power, were falling - one by one - against the sheer force of the ghost arm.

The first to fall was Madam Mo. Her screeches filled the night as the arm twisted its charred, severed limb around her throat. The weight of the grip crushed her windpipe before flinging her lifeless body across the room like a discarded doll. A’Tong followed soon after. His claws barely grazed the cursed flesh before the arm shot forward, gripping his head in a vice-like hold. With a sickening crunch, his body collapsed into a heap, lifeless.

Wei Wuxian’s pulse quickened. This wasn’t right. She had expected some resistance, but the ghost arm was too strong - it fought with unnatural force, its malevolent energy surging, nearly overwhelming the room and the freshly transformed corpses like it was nothing.

She bit her lip. Should she step in?

She couldn’t let the juniors be caught in the aftermath, but if she acted recklessly - if she revealed too much - it could all be over before she even had a chance to prepare.

Another corpse fell. Mo Ziyuan.

Now, only Zhan Feng remained.

The corpse stood tall, his once fluid movements jerking as he fought against the arm, his body operating purely on resentment. His dead eyes burned with lingering hatred, his jaw clenched as he lunged again and again, but the ghost arm was relentless. Each attack was dodged with unnatural ease, each strike met with an overwhelming counterforce.

Wei Wuxian clenched her fists.

This was bad.

She pressed two fingers against her lips, her breath steadying as she prepared to whistle - a simple tune, just enough to disrupt the balance of power and weaken the ghost arm. She could make it subtle, make it seem like something else-

But before the sound could leave her lips, the air around them shifted.

A deep, vibrating hum filled the space, the resonance so strong it sent chills down her spine. The walls seemed to tremble under the weight of the sound, the very ground quivering in response.

A guqin.

The note cut through the tension like a blade. The ghost arm, which had been violently thrashing moments ago, suddenly froze in place. The flames that once flickered hungrily along its charred surface dimmed, as if cowering before the sheer force of the sound.

Wei Wuxian’s breath caught in her throat.

The juniors immediately reacted.

Lan Sizhui, who had been gripping his sword tightly, visibly relaxed, his shoulders dropping as relief flooded his face. "Senior has arrived," he murmured, the certainty in his voice unmistakable.

Lan Jingyi let out a breath, his grip loosening on his weapon as he sheathed it with a huff. "About time," he muttered, straightening his robes before nodding toward the others. "Let’s go outside and greet them."

The other disciples followed suit, pulling their swords from the ground, their movements fluid and practiced.

One by one, they exited the room, stepping out into the cool night air.

Wei Wuxian, however, did not move.

She couldn’t.

Her muscles refused to obey, her limbs frozen as if she, too, had been caught in the grasp of that single zither note.

She had faced countless dangers before, had fought against monsters far worse than this, had danced between life and death more times than she could count. And yet, in this moment, it wasn’t fear of the ghost arm that made her blood run cold.

It was the zither.

That sound...

The note still echoed in the back of her mind, vibrating deep within her bones. She had known it the moment it had struck the air, the moment it had bound not only the ghost arm - but herself - within its grasp.

This wasn’t just any spiritual technique.

This was his zither technique.

Lan Wangji was here.

Wei Wuxian swallowed hard.

'What do I do?'

She couldn’t let herself be seen. Not now. Not by him.

Her fingers trembled against her robes as she crouched lower, her instincts screaming at her to move - to run - but her body remained still, the aftereffects of the zither’s power still pressing against her, still holding her in place.

Outside, the juniors’ voices grew fainter, their footsteps fading into the distance as they rushed to greet their senior.

Wei Wuxian clenched her jaw.

She had only a few moments to decide her next move.

The ghost arm had been subdued, but it wouldn’t be long before he stepped inside to inspect the situation.

If she was found - if he saw her -

No.

She couldn't let that happen.

'Move, Wei Wuxian!'

Forcing every ounce of willpower into her limbs, she took a slow, deep breath. The room still smelled of burnt flesh and the thick, acrid scent of resentment, but beneath it - beneath the layers of death and decay - was something else.

A familiar, faint scent carried by the night air.

Sandalwood.

Her heart pounded.

He was close.

Too close.

If she didn’t escape now - if she hesitated for even a second longer - he would find her.

With that final thought, she moved.

Silent as a shadow, she slid toward the farthest corner of the room, keeping to the edges where the dim candlelight flickered weakly. Her hands found the frame of a broken window, her breath coming in short, measured gasps.

She couldn’t use her full speed - not yet. If she did, she risked drawing attention.

She had to be careful.

One misstep, one sound, and all of this would be for nothing.

The juniors were outside. The ghost arm was frozen. And soon, he would step through that door.

Wei Wuxian pressed herself against the wooden frame, waiting for the right moment - waiting for the perfect opening -

And then, she slipped away into the night.
