Fynn took a deep breath as he woke up from the ground. He found the guards still up and alert. The guards rotated every few hours for safety reasons. Some guards seem to tolerate him, but others not as much. 'Kyle though,' Fynn thought, 'why would he want to join the army? Sure to help his country, but he should have been an artist.' Fynn puzzled at it for a long time. 'At least he is good company.' He thought.
One guard looked up, grinned, and shouted, "Morning Doodle! How'd ya sleep?" Fynn looked up and saw Kyle walking past the trucks. He looked at them and smiled.
"Hi Jack, you're taking the morning shift, huh?" Kyle had dark brown hair and sky blue eyes, they complimented the freckles on his face.
'Although,' Fynn thought, 'he doesn't look too well, is he alright?' Jack seemed to notice it too. "Hey bud," Jack commented, "you don't look too well. Are you okay?"
Kyle winced and said, "Yeah, it's just my morning face! You know how it is!" Jack shrugged.
Kyle looked at Fynn and smiled. "Hi Fynn! How are ya?"
"Ich bin gut."
Jack gaped at them and asked, "You know this guy?"
"Sure, we talk."
"Ha! Seems like you know everyone. Hey, he even looks about the same age as ya!" Jack turned to Fynn.
"How old are you?"
The whole conversation confused Fynn. Not knowing what to do he answered, "Siebzehn." Jack stared at him confused.
"Does anyone know what he just said?" Jack asked. A random guard said, "He says he's seventeen!"
Jack turned to Kyle who did not like this conversation one bit. "What about you Doodle?"
Kyle replied weakly, "Uhm, nineteen?" Fynn thought to himself, 'He's obviously lying about his age, but why though?'
Jack laughed, "You sure as hell don't look like it!" Kyle smiled anxiously.
"Well," Kyle said, "I have to head out. See you guys later." Jack shrugged. Although Kyle did not seem to notice. Instead he waved at Fynn. Surprised, he waved back.
When Kyle left, Fynn noticed Jack smiling sadly. "You know," Jack started, "I still don't like you." Fynn felt like someone stabbed a dagger in his back. He felt ashamed. He thought Jack genuinely wanted to get acquainted with him.
"But," Fynn looked up. "I guess I have to look nice for Kyle. He seems to really want to befriend you. Just, don't take that as an advantage. He's gullible, but has a big heart."
Fynn looked at Jack, guffawed. Kyle wanted to befriend Fynn? Why? He had so many questions. 'Well,' Fynn thought, 'my plan to not get close to anyone, failed. What now?'
"What are ya starin' at me for? It's Kyle you should ask questions about." Fynn quickly looked away embarrassed. He realized he had been staring at Jack the whole time.
The once quiet morning suddenly turned into a buzz as men grabbed their rifles and shouted at one another. The guards stood up in alarm. The other prisoners looked at each other, worried. Jack raced to a soldier and shouted, "What the hell is going on?!"
