On a normal day, a train ride with a motion sick dragon slayer groaning and flopping all over the place would've been entertaining enough to last the journey to their destination. However, on a normal day, Gray wouldn't be travelling with his guildmates to rescue his personal stalker from her own father and brother.
Lucy kept shaking her head, muttering things like 'I just don't get it,' or 'Poor Juvia.' The blonde girl looked on the verge of tears, cradling her hands tightly in her lap. Happy sat beside her, looking rather unhappy.
Gray turned his attention to the exterior of the compartment, watching as the forest they were passing through whooshed by. Whipping images of greenery and wildlife held his rapt attention in an effort not to think about Juvia.
The ice mage tried to weigh up his thoughts, as confusing and as jumbled as they were.
On the one hand, Juvia was a rather creepy girl with an unhealthy obsession for him. She had a wild imagination, a scary habit of following him around and an unattractive desire to please him.
Yet on the other hand, when she wasn't stalking him, she was a genuinely good person. Time and time again, she had proved her worth; proved she was reliable and that she could be depended upon. She was powerful, smart and, if he had to admit it, rather pretty. She could be good to talk to sometimes. Emphasis on the sometimes, in that sentence.
'Gray,' Lucy began quietly. 'What are you thinking about?'
Glancing sideways at her, Gray remained stationed by the window with his elbow resting on the sill, chin in his palm. He sighed heavily.
'What else?' he replied evasively.
Lucy nodded, 'Juvia?'
Happy's paws shot to his mouth and he exchanged a knowing look with Lucy, both of them smiling mischieviously as the same phrase rose to both their lips.
Gray set his arm down and sent them a half hearted glare, 'Not what you're thinking.'
Happy sulked, 'Aww.'
Lucy chuckled lightly shifting sideways as a puffy cheeked Natsu nearly rolled onto her. She rolled her eyes and pat his shoulder somewhat comfortingly.
'I know, I know,' she smiled. 'I was just teasing. I know you're worried about her, for real, I mean. Not, you know.'
Gray looked back out the window. They passed a creek, trickling merrily. The water glistened underneath the sun's glow. Seconds later, the train had zoomed past and it was out of sight.
'Yeah,' Gray trained his eyes determinedly on the outside. 'Its just, I don't know what to think about her.'
'Don't worry, I get it,' Lucy suddenly switched into her love doctor mode; a mode he didn't know she actually had. 'You think you could actually like her if she wasn't as obsessed with you. In fact, you think you might love her, but you're scared of how she'll react. You're scared that if its one sided at the moment, with her following you and being so possessive, what will happen when you tell her you like her back.'
Happy stared at her, wide eyed, 'Lucy! You said something smart!'
'Oh, shut up, cat!'
Gray blinked, utterly astonished. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, searching for words that wouldn't come as Lucy watched him with a generous amount of amusement.
