The monster

I worked on some important matters at hand regarding my.. well,— current purchases. I didn't plan to buy a goddamn company for her but rationality and her doesn't exist in the same room. My eyes flicked to her scowling face as she twisted and turned in the bed. I coudn't help but smile.

I don't even know why I smiled. Shaking my head, I brought my eyes back to the laptop. Focus.

After a good half an hour, I was nearly finished. Now that I had bought a company, I couldn't let my investment go waste. That wasn't me. Moreover it would raise suspisions. My eyes flicked to her for a brief moment, the lines of her face relaxed as she remained blissfully asleep, her hair spilling on the pillow and her form . . . utterly rigid?

I frowned, leaning forward to take a better look. Yes, she was tensed up, coiled tight like a spring. Her hands fisted at her sides gripping the bedsheets with such force, that her knuckles turned white. Closing my laptop I walked over to her, sitting at the edge of the bed.

She was having those episodes of sleep paralysis again.

I had stalked her enough to know that she suffers from something like that, but not enough to know why she'd be facing those. That is why I insisted not to let her sleep alone.

Okay.  That isn't the only reason.

Sleep paralysis can occur to any person but . . . I feel there's more than that, which is absurd because I'd have known.

Sweat lined her forehead and the corners of her hair. I held her shoulders gently, “Arohi?”
No answer came, as I had expected. I had zero ideas on what to do in situations like this. I shook her a little, holding her firmly, “Arohi..”

A tear drop escaped her eyes, gliding down the sides of her eyes. My heart twisted in a way that couldn't be explained. But it was awful. I didn't like her in tears. I wiped the tear stain off her face, then patted her cheek lightly. “Wake up,  Arohi..”

She sat up with gasp, sweat dripping from her forehead to her neck before disappearing behind her clothes. Her eyes darted around in the room as she struggled in my hold. “Arohi..”

She didn't seem to acknowledge me. Her eyes roved over the room,  as if searching for an escape. I tightened my grip on her just a fraction. “Relax.. Look at me. Here.” I rubbed her arms soothingly. “Look at me.” I commanded softly. But it wasn't a command. It was a plea. Get out of whatever fucked up shit that's going in your head.

Her struggling subsided while she seemed to realise where she was. She slowly moved her eyes to me.

Fuck.

Her chocolate brown orbs held fear. So much dread that it pulled my stomach into knots at the haunted look in her eyes. A feeling rose up in my chest, the one that I couldn't put a finger on. The only thing I knew it wasn't good.

“Water?” I asked in as much calm voice I could muster. The buzz beneath my skin didn't subside. She nodded quietly, still in daze with whatever she experienced.

I leaned back to take the glass of water from the bedside table, my grip loosening slightly. Her fingers tightened impossibly on my shirt, her knuckles turning white. I immediately wrapped a hand around her and brought the glass to her lips.
She flinched.
My hands tightened around the glass. Cold fury seeped through me at the thoughts of what might have happened for her to be so scared. I was right. There was more story than I knew.

She gulped a considerable amount, slowly returning to reality. She pushed the glass away and I placed it in the table again before turning to her. She was trembling.
