Months had passed and Clary was enjoying her time in Edom. She had not yet discovered whether Lilith had returned from the Void, but she had seen many things. She was finding a new appreciation for the ruins of Alicante and everything in the dimension. She took a long walk everyday, and a rune had recently appeared to her.
When her brother drew it on her, in the middle of her shoulder blades, a new rune blazed on her right wrist. She touched it, and black and red feathered wings sprouted from her shoulder blades. Sebastian's wings were a pure black when she marked him. On her first flight, she met Jace again. He was hiding in one of the houses, sleeping. She walked in, her wings folded, and sat down in front of him. He looked alarmingly pale. She leaned forwards to brush some of his hair out of his face, and he jerked awake. She pulled her arm back in a flash, and they looked at each other. His eyes were dimmed, hardly as gold as before. Darkness must be rising in him, too. Clary rose and went to walk out. She paused in the doorway. "It's funny," she said, "I think I'm still in love with you." She left before he could reply.
He did whisper a reply, and she managed to wait in the hallway to listen. "Me too," followed by a sob. Clary's eyes teared up, and she ran.Back in the castle, she sat on a black lounge with Sebastian, reading, when a commotion reached them. She looked up in time to see Jocelyn standing in front of them, tears in her eyes. She was dressed in ragged, dusty, black gear, a blazing seraph blade pointing towards them. "My children..." she breathed. "I'm sorry, especially to you, Clary, for having to do this."
All of the others who had broken in to Clary's castle fanned out behind Jocelyn, Jace directly hidden. Clever of them. Jocelyn raised her blade, and Sebastian had partially risen from the chair, when two golden hands snaked around her. One clamped onto the wrist holding the sword, the other squeezed her neck. Jace's head appeared to the side of Jocelyn's, his pale golden eyes with a cruel look in them. "I'm sorry, Jocelyn, but I've had a change of heart." Outrage grew from the rest of the intruders, with Alec suddenly doubling over in pain. His parabatai rune, she could tell, was burning, fading as Jace turned. A sword blossomed from Jocelyn's stomach, and she fell. Her love stepped around the woman, smiling, to take a seat next to Clary.
Sebastian spoke next. "Welcome back, brother."
"I'm happy to be back."
Sebastian's eyes raked the others as Clary gifted Jace with his black and gold wings. Endarkened had arrived in the room. "Take them out of here, and kill them," he said. As they were dragged out struggling, the dying woman on the floor looked up at the three teenagers sitting on the black couch. She drew a rattling breath, and breathed no more.
So it was recorded that the last sight of Jocelyn Fairchild was that of three teenagers, one with white hair, one red, and one gold. As her vision faded, the image that stayed with her was of three identical pairs of ebony black eyes and three cruel, amused smiles.
