Our paws dig into the earth, gaining and hopefully closing the distance between our mate and us. My wolf's breathing is even and determined. All senses are on full alert. Now that I've given the green light, he has one goal: to complete the bond with his mate. He's yearned for this day since Willow turned eighteen and we picked up that sweet, smoky scent we've been drooling over ever since. We couldn't miss that scent no matter how subtle. It's exactly what will lead us to our mates, even with their cute attempt to confuse us by purposefully planting it sporadically throughout the forest.

We take a deep breath, allowing our mate's scent to settle in our veins.

My wolf lets out a gentle growl of pleasure and amusement. He's proud of his mate and Luna. It's a smart move on their part. It's just too bad my wolf and I are so in tune with their scent that we can practically feel the scent pulling us like a leash toward them.

We're close because the scent is fresh, making our mouth water.

Their effort wouldn't be in vain if we were any other wolf. But it is us chasing them, so they don't stand a chance.

Where are you, little mate?

Aah-oooooh!

The sound of distressed howls, a whole lot of them, coming from the direction of my pack stops me dead in my tracks. A tug in my mind lets me know someone is trying to reach me through the pack link. Fear pumps in my chest. Something's wrong. I can't ignore my pack, not with their cries, but I'm afraid I'll lose Willow if I don't catch up to her now.

Another round of howls forces me to open my mind.

'Alpha,' Emeric says through the link. 'We need you back here. I don't know how to explain this, but somehow, someone got onto our territory and helped Eve escape.'

'What do you mean Eve escaped?'

'I don't know exactly how to explain it. We have no scents...she's just gone and the guards watching her are dead. Looks like they'd been taken from behind. None of it makes sense Alpha. There are no scents-'

'I'm coming.' My jaw clenches, knowing I must go back.

'I'll meet you at the dungeon with the rest of the team,' Emeric says before closing the link.

My wolf lets out a pained howl, knowing what it means to do so. I spin around and head straight toward my pack, taking with me my shattered heart. The more time and distance Willow gains, the harder it will be for us to find her, but the pack comes first. But, if I know anything about Willow, she'd hate me if I didn't turn back and protect our pack.

We may have failed her as a pack, but she is, at her core, a Luna.

Our pack, the thought fills me with joy. It's the first time I've acknowledged what I should have always acknowledged: the Lunar Eclipse Pack isn't only my pack; it's also Willow's. It's our destined role as Alpha and Luna to protect this pack.
