the airport was a mess. starr had always hated flying, but flying with the entire cast and crew of regretting you? an absolute nightmare. everyone was either running late, arguing with tsa, or causing some kind of scene. and to make things worse, ahliya was right there, acting like nothing had happened, like the entire internet wasn't ripping her to shreds after the scandal.
"if she asks me to switch seats with her on this flight, i swear to god," starr muttered, adjusting the strap of her carry-on as she stood in line at security.
"i'll switch seats with you," mason offered, leaning against the barrier beside her. his voice was light, teasing, but there was something in his expression—something softer than usual. something that made her heart feel weirdly unsteady.
she rolled her eyes. "i don't need you to switch seats, i need her to disappear."
"tragically, i don't think she got banned from the industry overnight."
"tragically," starr repeated, sighing. "but you know what? it's actually kind of funny. she thought she could get away with it. she thought she was untouchable. and now? now she's stuck on a twelve-hour flight to london with the people she tried to ruin."
mason smirked. "poetic justice."
"very."
by some stroke of luck, they ended up sitting next to each other on the plane. well, maybe not luck—starr had definitely subtly made sure of it when checking in. but still, it felt like the universe was making sure they were exactly where they needed to be.
as the plane took off, she glanced over at mason, who was scrolling through his phone. "so. have you checked the news?"
"not yet. should i?"
she smirked. "absolutely."
he did, and immediately, his eyes widened. "oh, this is bad."
