Dinah smirked as she glanced at a text from Isaac reminding her of a date they had planned for tomorrow evening. Since their meeting at that bar, the two had been going out for a few weeks, catching some dinner here, watching a movie there, it was as good as you can get in the first few weeks of a relationship and Dinah couldn't be happier. As she slipped her phone back into her pocket, Dinah caught her reflection in her office window, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
It was a bit embarrassing that the Black Canary, a member of the legendary Justice League, felt her heart race and butterflies flutter in her stomach at the thought of another date with Isaac. Yet, she welcomed the sensation.
Of course Dinah never told the whole truth about who she was and what little she did revealed she felt as if Isaac knew more than she revealed. Still, Dinah opted not to question it and moved on without further consideration.
Even though being with Isaac made the superhero side of her life more complicated, she cherished every moment they spent together.
"Dinah." The sudden voice of Batman cut through her office's communication system.
"Yes?" She stood a little straighter, Batman's tone immediately pulling her from daydreams of tomorrow's date.
"I'll bring the team's new instructor by in an hour. Have the team gathered before we arrive."
Dinah nodded. "I guess you still have no intention of telling me who this mystery man is?"
"Not yet," Batman replied, the faintest hint of amusement before the transmission clicked off.
Dinah folded her arms, shaking her head with a rueful smile. Trust Batman to keep everything close to his chest, even for recruits.
She took a deep breath and stepped into the main training room, a vast space filled with state-of-the-art equipment. "Okay, team!" she called out, her voice echoing. "Gather up! We've got a visitor showing up soon."
Robin was the first to respond, flipping down from the rafters where he'd been perched. He landed gracefully beside her, adjusting his mask. "Visitor?" he asked, eyebrows raised.
"New instructor," Dinah confirmed. "Don't ask me who; Batman's keeping it under wraps."
Miss Martian descended gracefully from the upper level, with Artemis and Aqualad strolling confidently toward the team. Kid Flash slid to a stop right next to them.
The kids exchanged curious glances. "What do you mean we don't get to know?" Wally protested. "I've got lots of guesses! Like a retired villain! Ooh, or—"
"Not helping," Robin said with a smirk.
They gathered around Dinah, anticipation rippling through the group. She looked at each of them, admiring their eagerness and energy. It reminded her of when she started—all fire, dreams, and impossibly high hopes.
As they settled in to wait, Dinah felt her phone vibrate again. A small thrill ran through her when she saw Isaac's name pop up with another message—this time, a simple winking emoji. She smiled to herself, shaking her head at his playful persistence.
"Earth to Canary," Artemis teased. "I'm guessing it's not Batman."
Dinah slipped the phone back into her pocket. "Not Batman."
Artemis crossed her arms, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "I hate it when he pulls this secretive crap."
Aqualad nodded in agreement, though he maintained his composed demeanor. "It would be beneficial to know who we're dealing with."
"I know," Dinah said. "But you know how he is. I'm sure he has id reasons and we'll find out soon enough."
Kid Flash wasn't deterred. "No fun. I bet it's someone we've never even heard of." He zipped around the room, unable to stand still.
