"Mr. Williams, are you still with us?" a woman asked, her voice gently pulling me back to the moment.
Since leaving the mercenary life behind, and adopting Lily, I got a fake identity. Although I kept my first name, Isaac, I decided to change my last name to Williams. Lilly wanted me to have the same last name as hers but I think it's raise more questions than answers.
A girl randomly shows up who looks similar to the daughter of a deceased politician and just so happens to share the same name? Yeah, I'd like to to think that would raise a few alarms. So, after an argument or two, Lily decided I will be Isaac Williams and she would be 'Lily Williams', my daughter.
Our story was pretty simple: my wife and I were unable to have children which lead us to adopting Lily. As for my wife? Well she got sick a few years back and ultimately passed away, which left me to care for our daughter all alone. It was a simple and understandable lie but what surprised me the most is that the plan was Lily's idea. Weird, then again she is a politicians daughter, so lying must be nothing new to her.
Anyways, Bruce hacked into a nearby hospital computer and helped forge some medical records while I broke into an adoption agency and did a little file rearranging until things lined up perfectly.
Y'know, because that's what normal people do, after all.
Everything was traceable and nothing was deniable. If this taught me one thing it's this: Lily might just be a genius but she's also a scary good liar. I couldn't be more proud.
"Sorry, days in the office seem to be having more of an effect on me than I thought. What were you saying, Ms. Hutchins?"
"Yes, well, as I mentioned earlier, the school contacted you today because it seems Lily was involved in another...altercation." I glanced to my left and saw Lily absentmindedly begin to whistle while staring out the window.
"Normally, this might be something we would let slide, after all, her teachers usually describe Lily as a well-behaved and outstanding student. But lately, these incidents have become concerning. This marks the seventh fight in two months. Several parents are demanding her expulsion, and while I somewhat see their point..."
The two of us looked at Lily, who had stopped whistling, instead her fists tightened and her gaze were locked on the ground.
"I also understand she is not solely responsible, so I have devised an alternative action. Due to the frequency of the fights and how close we are to the end of the school year, I have decided to suspend Lily for the rest of the semester." For the first time in the meeting, Lily looked up and made eye contact with me, her eyes filled with worry as she waited for my reply.
"Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!" Lily cried out. I was trying to correct her behavior in the only way I knew how in public. I pinched and twisted her cheeks until a tiny red mark appeared on her skin.
"Let me go, Isaac! You're embarrassing me!" The young woman shouted. She threw her arms against my chest in an attempt to get me off of her.
"Pamela," I called out to her.
-Third Person POV-
Her flailing stopped, and she looked up into Isaac's eyes. "What happened?" He asked. Lily remained quiet and quickly darted her eyes to the floor, finding the dull tile floor interesting.
"With all due respect, Mr. Williams..." the principal said, "Lily fought and injured three other female students. Surely her testimony won't..." Before she could complete her sentence, Isaac shot her a glare that made her shiver.
"With all due respect, Principal Hutchins," his tone was icy and commanding, offering no opportunity for debate. "I need to understand why Lily would get into another fight and jeopardize her scholarships." The principal nodded unsteadily at Isaac, who returned to Pamela, anticipating her reply. "Lily? Can you tell us what happened?" The young woman fell silent, keeping her gaze fixed on the ground. Isaac softened his demeanor and placed a comforting hand on the girl's shoulder.
