Samira stepped out of Alice's chambers, the heavy wooden door closing behind her with a dull thud. The corridor was eerily silent, the chaos of the birth now contained within the walls she had just left. Her body felt as if it no longer belonged to her—her limbs weak, her breath shallow. Whether it was the strain of the night's ordeal or the weight of the emotions she refused to acknowledge, she didn't know.
She pressed a trembling hand against the cold stone wall, her legs unsteady beneath her. Every step toward her chambers felt heavier, as though unseen chains were dragging behind her.
When she reached the sanctuary of her own room, she barely made it through the doorway before her strength abandoned her completely.
Her vision blurred, the flickering candlelight dancing in her periphery as her knees buckled. A gasp tore from her lips as the ground rushed to meet her—but before she could collapse, Esma was there.
"Your highness!" Esma's arms caught her just in time, the weight of her queen sending both of them stumbling backward. Panic laced her voice as she cried out, "Someone! Help—"
Samira's hand clamped onto Esma's wrist, her grip weak but firm enough to stop her.
"No," she whispered. "No one."
Esma's eyes filled with distress. "You need a healer. The physician returned—he can—"
"He's with Alice," Samira murmured, her voice devoid of emotion. "With the baby."
The words tasted bitter on her tongue. The baby. Philip's heir. The future of the crown. And yet, none of it belonged to her.
She let out a shaky breath and closed her eyes. "I just need sleep, Esma."
Esma tightened her grip on her queen's arms. "You need more than sleep."
Samira leaned her head back against the wall, exhaustion pressing down on her like an unbearable weight. "I just want to close my eyes and never wake up again."
The confession slipped from her lips like a prayer—quiet, broken, and full of an ache that no amount of time could mend.
Esma sucked in a sharp breath, tears gathering at the corners of her eyes. "Don't say that, please."
But Samira said nothing more. Her body slumped forward as sleep—or something dangerously close to surrender—dragged her under.
Two weeks later
Alice lay in her chambers, cradling her newborn son in her arms, his tiny form bundled in fine silk. Exhaustion evident in the dark circles beneath her eyes. But despite the weariness in her limbs, her mind was sharp—calculating.
She had lost Philip once, but she would not lose him again.
Her fingers brushed against the baby's soft cheek, and she smirked. This child was her greatest weapon.
"Your father will see," she murmured to the infant, rocking him gently. "Without me, without us, he has nothing."
The palace was tense with the looming threat of war, but Alice saw opportunity in the chaos. Philip was vulnerable. Samira was fragile, teetering on the edge of despair after her loss. And a man like Philip, a king burdened by duty, would have no choice but to turn to the mother of his heir.
The knock at the door was soft but insistent. A moment later, her lady-in-waiting stepped inside, bowing. "The king has returned from the war chamber, my lady. He is in his study."
Alice smirked. Perfect.
Carefully, she adjusted her robe, ensuring the rich fabric draped elegantly over her shoulders. She ran her fingers through her golden curls, letting them fall loosely around her face. She looked every bit the devoted mother, the strong yet delicate woman who had just given Philip his future.
