The large metal grille creaked as Thomas pushed it open, tossing it to the side. The others watched him, their breath held captive as he slipped out the opening. He frantically scanned his surroundings, eyes darted around like a hunted animal's. His muscles were coiled tight, ready for flight or fight. Once he was sure the coast was clear, he signaled for the rest to follow him into a new maze — a Maze of the back rooms that lay ahead.
Madylin was the first of the group out, ducking through the opening. She turned quickly, crouching near the vent to help the others out. Her hands reached instinctively for Newt, who hesitated for a split second before squeezing through the narrow exit. Elizabeth was next; her small frame easily slipped through, but Madylin grabbed her arm and helped her to her feet with a sense of urgency.
More figures scrambled towards her in the dim light, each one desperate to escape the clutches of confinement. She counted them silently, making sure no one was left behind, and pulled one after the other to freedom. Her anxiety grew with each passing second. Aris was the last to clamor out, and Madylin heaved a sigh of relief, half-dragging him clear of the opening.
"That's everyone." She glanced back into the shadows of the vent, the anxiety tightening her chest.
"Good, let's go," Thomas began to lead the group.
"You guys go ahead, there's something I gotta do," Aris announced, everyone stopping in their tracks.
"What are you talking about?" Madylin tensed, her trust in him faltering slightly. "You're not ditching us now, Aris."
"Trust me, it's important. You guys wanna get out of here, right?" He questions the group. "Just go!"
Madylin crossed her arms, her frown deepening.
"I'll go with him," Winston spoke up firmly, stepping toward Aris with a determined nod.
"Me too." Elizabeth chimed in. Madylin sighed, frustration bubbling to the surface.
Thomas didn't stop a second to think, immediately trusting the three to make it back to them. "Fine, go."
And with that the two groups split ways, Thomas guiding their group down the corridor. They ran until they hit a corner, pausing, as they came face to face with Doctor Crawford, whose eyebrows raised when she saw the group. Her expression shifted from shock to confusion as an alarm began to blare.
