The frantic drumbeat of my heart echoed the chaotic thoughts swirling in my head. Beatrix's face, from mere moments ago, flashed behind my eyelids. I had leaned in, inches away from her lips, ready to kiss her, only to be arrested by a sudden, jarring whisper of caution. Take it slow. But then, I saw her eyes—her expression and in that moment, I lost all semblance of control. The urge to close the distance between us overwhelmed me.

But I just couldn't do it. Not when I knew that she sought these moments as an escape from the chaos inside her own mind.

"Ethan..." My dad's voice echoed down the hallway, sharp and commanding as I crossed it.

I paused, halting in my tracks and turning to face him. A frown tugged at my lips, as I met his gaze.

                   "Yeah?" I replied.

He was standing in the doorway,
"You didn't go to college today?"

I shrugged, trying to brush it off, but the truth was, I'd overslept.

"What's the point?" I muttered, "If you're just gonna force me to leave anyway?"

His expression hardened,
"So, you've finally decided to go abroad or join the business?"

"No," I snapped, the sharpness in my voice catching me off guard. "I'm not going."

"Why not? So you can just sit around here, wasting your life?"

For a moment, I froze, my eyes drifting down to the floor as I struggled to find the words.

"I'm not wasting anything," I said, "And stop pushing me into things I don't want to do." I exhaled slowly, trying to keep my composure. "Just... leave me be."

"I'll leave you be, when I think you're on the right path," he said, his voice taking on a tone of finality.

I didn't answer. I didn't even glance back at him. I just turned and walked away, staying any longer would only make things worse. If I did, I knew I might say something cruel, something I couldn't take back.

———

"Why are you sitting here?" Beatrix asked, glancing back over her shoulder as soon as I settled into the seat behind her.

I raised an eyebrow, letting a playful smirk dance across my lips.
"Why?" I asked, my voice teasing. "Can't I sit here?"

Her eyes flickered for a moment, widening just slightly before she quickly looked away.

"Yeah, you can sit wherever you want," she muttered, her tone a little too quick. She turned her head a  sharply, almost as if she were trying to hide her face from me. What was that about?
