"Dad..." Ethan stepped in front of me, shielding me from the glare of his father. His voice was tight, strained.
"I told you—we can talk later. At home."
His father's gaze darkened as it flicked past Ethan and landed on me.
"Yeah, right. You don't even come home." He then shifted his attention back to Ethan, a flicker of disappointment in his eyes.
"And I told you to get rid of this playboy behavior... I should have just sent you abroad."
'Playboy?'
Ethan turned to me quickly, urgency in his eyes, like he knew exactly how much those words could sting.
"Just... ignore him," he said, gently but firmly. "I'll explain everything later. I promise."
I nodded slowly, though my thoughts were spiraling. Everything was moving too fast, spinning out of control—and I couldn't catch my footing.
"Wait for me in the room, okay? Just give me a sec," Ethan said, his eyes briefly meeting mine before turning back to his father.
"Ethan, I am talking to you!" His father's voice boomed, echoing in the tense atmosphere. "All you do nowadays is roaming around... Were you with her last night?"
"Dad, could you just shut up for a minute?" Ethan snapped, his head whipping around to face his father, his voice rough with an edge I hadn't heard before.
"What did you just say to me?" his father growled, then turned his fury toward me. "And you—get out. Stay away from my son. Do you hear me?"
I stood frozen, caught in the crossfire between father and son. What was going on? My thoughts were a jumbled mess, my mind unable to grasp the rapidly escalating situation.
"Shut up, please!" Ethan's voice rose again, sharp and raw. It made me flinch. My hands trembled as the shouting echoed around us, my pulse racing, wild.
"I'm done waiting on your decisions," his father snarled. "You're going abroad, and that's final. No more arguing. From now on, I'll decide what's best—and you'll follow."
Abroad?
The thought sent a cold wave of panic through me.
Instinctively, I reached out and grasped Ethan's hand, my fingers tightening around his. He had been about to speak, but my touch stopped him.
"Ugh... this is so annoying," he muttered under his breath.
He turned to me, his gaze softening.
"I am dragging you into this. Sorry," he said, his voice gentle as his eyes met mine.
Before I could respond, he turned back to his father—this time with calm, steady determination.
"Just... calm down, Dad. And listen. Just this once."
"Huh...?" His father's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise in them.
"We're dating," Ethan said, voice firm but not harsh. He reached down and held my hand tighter "and you got the whole situation wrong."
