I took a deep breath to relax as I was making ginger bread man. My hands kept on shaking and it wouldn’t stop but it didn’t stop me from doing my famous little man. I put the shaped ginger bread tool onto the mix and make a new cookie as I feel a hand on my shoulder. “Mom, go take care of the kids. I’ll do the rest.” I turned around and saw my daughter look at me. “But…” I started. “There’s no but.” I left the kitchen and went to the living room.

I found it filled with my grand kids, playing around the Christmas trees. I heard them laugh and scream and I smiled. I went to put on some music and found an old CD that reminded me of when I was younger. I put it on. It reminded me of the summer of my 18th birthday.

I saw my husband came in. All the kids went up to him to give me huge hugs. I smiled again. They loved their grandpa so much. He blew me a kiss from across the room and sat in his old chair. I walked and sat next to him. “I love that song so much,” He started, “Our first dance.” We both smiled. “I love it too.”

I thought about that summer. When we met, we fell in love and how everything was perfect. It still was. I couldn’t be happier to see all my family reunited for Christmas. “Hey kids, come here. Your grandma and I have a story to tell you.” I saw all the kids come sit next to us. I saw my oldest grand child sit next to me.

“Do you wanna know how your granny and I met?” I hated that when he called me like this. “Yes!” They all shouted at the same time. “Ok so it takes us back far away, way before you guys were born…”

“ Nate! Watch Out!” I screamed as I saw little Nathan fall of the slide. I ran up to him. “Are you ok kiddo?” I saw tears fill his eyes. “It’s okay.” I took him in a long hug before whipping his tears away. “You’ll see it won’t even hurt this afternoon.”

I took his hand in mine and we began to walk from the slide to the picnic table where I left our stuff. The park was half empty with only a few kids playing. I cleaned Nathan’s bruise and he went back to playing.

“Hey Look at me!” Nathan screamed as I looked away to see him standing on top the playground. “Be careful!” I answered as I smile. I saw him return back down and run to me. He was breathing hard, trying to catch his breath between words. “Can we go buy ice cream?” He was smiling, surely to win me over.

“I don’t know if your mom would let us have ice cream…” I saw him with his famous puppy eyes. I couldn’t resist those. “Ok fine. Let’s go!” I said as I got up and started walking with Nate to the store nearby to get ice cream.

We walked really fast because Nathan was really excited to get his ice cream. “This will be our secret ok?” I asked him. He nodded. “I will never tell.” We entered the place and saw Ben the man who sold ice cream in town. We said hi and I ordered an ice cream for me. Nathan wasn’t sure of what he wanted yet. “Chocolate or vanilla?” He shook his head. “I don’t know! It’s hard to choose!”

“I’d take both if I were you.” I heard a voice from behind. I turned over and saw a blonde guy standing next to us. “Look,” he said to Nathan, “This one is chocolate, vanilla AND strawberry.” Nathan looked amazed. “So cool.” He screamed and the big boy laughed.
