Chapter 8: The World Is Changing

I wake up to sirens and a noise that sounds like the earth is crumbling. "We need to get out of here." Jayden yelled. 

Me as a phoenix and Jayden as a tiger, we run for the door and it's unlocked. We make way for the gym but when we get there the ceiling is falling in. Claire and Ethan come darting towards us. "What the heck is happening?!" Ethan shouted over the sirens.

"It's what they warned us about. The world is changing. That's why they changed us into animals, so we could survive the new world in a new environment." Jayden said. 

"We're gonna have to fly to get out of here." I shouted. 

"But how is Jayden supposed to?" Ethan asked. "He's huge and you can't carry him."

"Just watch." Jayden said. He turned into a blue phoenix right before our eyes. Ethan and Claire were amazed. 

"How did you do that?" Ethan questioned in awe.

"I don't know. Now let's leave." We started flying but I realized Ethan couldn't fly since he was a fox. I turned around and picked him up. 

After many turns Jayden said, "Go out the main doors." We all flew through the big broken glass doors. Right before our eyes New York was sinking like there was a giant sinkhole below it. Cars getting sucked in and buildings collapsing. 

A tear escaped from my eye. "My family."

"Uh guys, where are we gonna go until the whole world falls into a bottomless pit?" Ethan asked trying to break the silence.

"Fly out far enough where we can rest on top of a building. Then fly farther as the crumbling gets closer to us." Claire suggested. 

"Let's do it." I said in agreement.

We started flying but saw that there were 'sinkholes' everywhere. "Okay new plan." Ethan cried.

"Let's fly up towards the clouds." Jayden said. "I overheard some others talking in the gym one time and they said that you can walk on clouds."

"It's worth a shot." I said. We flew up towards the clouds and when we arrived we fell on them. Surely enough, the clouds held us. I dropped Ethan and we all gasped for air. 

Once we all caught our breath Ethan joked, "Hey we could just live in the clouds for the rest of our lives."

Jayden smacked him on the back of the head and yelled, "You idiot! Where would we get food and water?" 

"Actually, that's a good idea." I said. "We could stay up here until all this collapsing is done. Then, once the world has changed we fly back down." 

After a few minutes of silence Jayden said, "For now let's try to forget about this and sleep." 

I walked away from the others and tried to sleep. I heard Jayden coming towards me. He sat down beside me and I opened my eyes. "Did Ethan fall out of the clouds?" I joked. 

"No he just said he wanted to be alone for awhile. I probably made him made or something."

"What do you think the new world is gonna look like?" I asked.

"Well, it's either gonna be beautiful or look like crap." We both laughed.

"I wonder how long this is going to take?" I said.

"Hopefully not to long. Ethan gets crabby when he's hungry." 

"I'm going to try to sleep and maybe this will be over when I wake up." I told Jayden.

I fell asleep thinking about what happened to my family. If they really did fall of a building or if Jayden was right and they were still alive.
