The moon hung low, casting a pale glow over the dense forest. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the distant echo of nocturnal creatures. Four nights had passed since their harrowing escape into the depths of the forest. The group had moved cautiously, the dense canopy above shielding them from prying eyes, while the unfamiliar terrain kept them on constant alert.
The forest, once a place of refuge, had become a maze of uncertainty. Each rustle in the underbrush, each distant howl, served as a reminder of the dangers lurking just beyond sight. Yet, amidst the tension, a fragile friendship had begun to form among the four companions. As they settled for the night and Jisoo started a fire, they sat around it soaking the warmth.
Jennie sat apart from the others, her gaze fixed on the flickering flames of their modest campfire. The light danced across her features, highlighting the furrow in her brow and the tightness in her jaw. She had been quiet since their trek deeper through the forest, her thoughts seemingly elsewhere.
Lisa approached, her footsteps silent on the forest floor. She settled beside Jennie, offering a canteen of water.
" You've been distant," Lisa remarked softly.
Jennie accepted the canteen, taking a slow sip before responding.
" There's something I need to share with all of you. Something I should have said earlier."
The weight of her words hung in the air, the crackling fire the only sound between them.
Lisa's brow furrowed with concern. "What is it?"
Jennie took a deep breath, her gaze meeting Lisa's. "I wasn't just sent to track you. I was sent to eliminate you."
The words hung in the air, heavy and charged with unspoken history.
Jisoo broke the silence, her voice steady but laced with emotion.
"You were sent to kill Lisa?" she asked, eyes narrowing.
Jennie nodded, her gaze unwavering. "Yes ", her voice barely above a whisper.
"They told me she was a threat, that her powers were unpredictable and dangerous, and that I had to force her to release her suppressed powers before doing so."
She looked up, meeting Lisa's eyes. "But when I found you, I saw someone scared, someone trying to understand herself. Not a monster."
Jennie took a deep breath, steadying herself. "I couldn't go through with it. I defied my orders, and now I'm here, with all of you."
The group remained silent, the crackling fire the only sound. Jennie continued, "I know I betrayed your trust. I don't expect forgiveness, but I needed you to know the truth."
She glanced around, her eyes lingering on each of them. "I chose to stay because I believe in us. In what we can do together."
The firelight showing their faces, revealing a mix of emotions—shock, betrayal, understanding. Jennie waited, the silence stretching, hoping for acceptance, or at least, understanding.
Jisoo stood, her expression resolute. "We need to decide our next move. Let's start with not keeping secrets, because you all deserve the truth. We've been through too much together to keep skeletons in our cupboards."
