Shadow and Ariana were walking along the road towards the suburbs. The sky was starting to grow dark as they approached an abandoned village. Shadow looked round “Another abandoned village. Just how many of us survived that event anyway? Was it really so few?”

“Shadow” said Ariana breathing heavily “Can we rest?...please” he sighed

yeah alright. It’s getting dark anyway, it’s dangerous to walk around in the dark. You never know when monsters are coming. Alright let’s see what we can gather from this dump”

“if it hasn’t been raided. Should we split up?”

“no…there could very well be others camping like us. So…let’s stick together” she nodded as they began searching the house.

They set up a small fire in one of the houses as the last glimmers begin to peter out. They found a rather good haul with plenty of drinking water and canned food. The two were eating out of fruit cans which were still fresh. Ariana was happy “This is so good. It’s a been a long time since I had any fruit”

“oh…it has hasn’t it. I much prefer meat any time”

“you say that but you look quite contempt”

“Don’t be stupid. The first rule of survival is to not be picky and not throw away anything that’s edible” she felt a bit scared by his comment

“Hey Shadow…can I ask you something? Did you see any other survivors on your trip?”

“a few…why do you ask?”

“well…erm…how come you didn’t join them?

Shadow didn’t answer at first “the chances of survival are higher in a smaller group. You have less mouths to feed and less people to take care of” she looked unhappy at his answer

you also have less people looking out for you” she retorted “what if you get hurt and no-one is there to help you?”

“then…that’s my own fault” he said plainly. Ariana put her tin down and laid down in front of the fire

you have been on your own too long Shadow” she said as she settled down to go to sleep. Shadow looked to her and then outside

well…I’ve managed this long...haven’t I?”

“yes but…how much longer Shadow?” he thought about this but simply fell asleep.

During the thick of night Shadow was awoken by the sound of lightning. “What the?” he then heard it again “is it a storm?” he looked up at the calm sky as another bolt of lightning sound “no it’s not” Ariana was now waking up and quite worried

it is a storm shadow?”

“no it’s not. The sky is calm and…there’s no thunder” as he got up he went outside to the almost pitch black “jeez it’s dark out here but…that should make it easier to spot” Ariana walked out with him as then they attentions turned to the right to see a bolt of lightning shot along the ground “if it’s not a storm…it might be a person”

“Should we go see?”

“Yes…we have to make sure it won’t involve us”
